Job summary
To manage the smooth and effective delivery of the catering service to patients at ward level. Manage and organise ward operative staff and supervisors to ensure a good quality meal service to patients daily.
To support / deputise departmental managers in their absence.
Ensure departmental compliance with the regulations and standards for Food Hygiene and Health & Safety.
Main duties of the job
o Possess HND or equivalent in Hotel and Catering Industry or 3 years relevant experience in the health service sector.o Hold Intermediate Certificates in Health & Safety and experience of monitoring and promoting Health & Safety in the workplace.o Hold Advanced Food Hygiene Certificate and have experience establishing, monitoring and correction of working practices.o Have experience and track record of managing staff in a large production/service environment.o Have an understanding and some experience in the management skills relating to human resources, financial planning, business development and customer awareness.o Be numerate, literate and have basic IT skills to include Word and Excel. (standard keyboard skills)o Possess strong organisational, communication, negotiating and delegation skills and have the ability to engender confidence and influence the behaviour of a large multi-skilled work force.o Have experience in the introduction and implementation of change smoothly and effectively.o Possess a can-do attitude.Ability to act independently using initiative a day-to-day basis within SOPs and with facility to escalate to Catering Manager when required.

Job responsibilities
- Responsible for the day to day running of the Ward Operative Service at NBT as designated by the Head of Catering.
- Plan and organise the delivery of approximately 2000 meals per day according to schedule through close liaison with CPU and wards
- On a daily basis assess staffing resource available and required and make judgements about allocation to best meet service needs.
- Deal with staff over ward location on a daily basis where allocation may be contentious / unpopular but required due to staffing resource.
- Responsible for maintaining the required standards of food service, presentation and distribution ensuring the service meets agreed service times and quality standards.
- To take corrective action as required to avoid any problems or complaints associated with the patient catering service.
- Deal with patients complaints face to face over food quality, menu content, special diets etc where tact and empathy is required particularly if patients are confused, very unwell.
- To deputise for the Head of Catering.
- To maintain a profile at the service delivery points including monitoring quality of service and customer satisfaction, visiting patients and relatives to resolve complaints.
- To ensure that all reports, monitoring records and administration requirements are completed and submitted on time.
- Liaise with fellow managers and production staff concerning theme days and special events, assisting where required.
- To attend meetings as required by the Head of Catering.
- Work with the Head of Catering to review and regenerate catering department policies and procedures.
- Always exhibit a professional image, portraying exemplary behaviour in dealing with subordinates and customers.
- To communicate departmental business through team briefs as required by the Head of Catering.
- To make regular inspections throughout all shift patterns to ensure that Trust and statutory Hygiene and Health & Safety standards are maintained.

- To ensure all repairs/fault are reported and completed in a timely manor
