Job summary
We are seeking an experienced midwife (minimum 2 years). We can offer you an opportunity to contribute towards the development of our service and care provision for women affected by issues such as: substance misuse problems, mental health difficulties, domestic abuse or learning needs.
We are looking for a midwife who has an excellent knowledge of safeguarding thresholds, and is able to assist midwives in the community and the hospital to best support women with complex care needs. You will be pivotal in achieving effective liaison with, and referral to, other agencies, in particular Children's Social Care, so excellent communication and advocacy skills are essential. You will be supported to develop their knowledge relating to the child protection process.
The role is working between Monday to Friday.
Main duties of the job
The Specialist Midwife for complex care will lead the service for women who have vulnerabilities to include those who misuse drugs and alcohol, safeguarding concerns; teenage pregnancies, domestic abuse, significant mental health concerns, homelessness and non-English speaking, in pregnancy.
This will encompass clinical practice development and liaison with statutory and non-statutory agencies and all members of the multidisciplinary team. You work collaboratively with the Named Midwife for Safeguarding and the Nurse Consultant for Safeguarding / Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children and Young People, within the Trust, to set, monitor and maintain robust child protection arrangements and interagency working. The Specialist midwife is also a key member of the wider maternity service and will provide enhanced care and access for vulnerable women; and is expected to work in close collaboration with colleagues to achieve the maternity unit and Trusts objectives.

There is an Alongside Midwifery Unit , and Home Birth Team with highly skilled midwifery teams who value the autonomy and varied responsibilities of these areas.
The Maternity services are well renowned nationally and internationally, having created and developed PROMPT and has a wide research portfolio. Room 10 is a truly multi-disciplinary hub room on the central delivery suite which demonstrates the value of working alongside others with professionalism and safety.

Provide expert skills and effective clinical leadership in acting as a role model for all staff.
Take the lead in the development of clear pathways of care between and within a range of services, including primary care, secondary care, specialist services and non-statutory services.
Facilitate the further development of evidence-based protocols to ensure best practice in caring for vulnerable women with complex issues.

Maintain clinical midwifery skills in line with best practice to deliver a safe and effective service.
To formulate care plans and provide care in conjunctions with the woman, medical team, and other agencies.
Co-ordinate holistic care to women and families affected by complex care issues.
The practitioner may be expected to take part in the on-call rota for the unit.
Foster close working relationships with all agencies including health, education, police, and childrens social care to develop support and care for vulnerable families.
Ensure the effective sharing of relevant information with other professional working with individual children and families.
Ensure adherence to Local Area Safeguarding Board Policies and the 1989 Childrens Act. This includes providing input and expert advice for pre-birth assessment and core team reviews.
Attend local and national forums pertaining to vulnerable women. To promote interaction with multi-professional agencies and sharing of good practice and disseminate feedback from these forums.
To have a thorough understanding and knowledge of national and local safeguarding procedures / escalation with respect to safeguarding both adult and children.
To have knowledge and understanding of the national and local public health agenda.
