Applications are invited for a suitably qualified Biomedical Scientist, with a background in a Biochemistry, to join our committed and enthusiastic team at North Bristol NHS Trust.
This is a non-rotational post within the Biochemistry Department to provide specialist diagnostic laboratory services detailed below,Clinical and Coronial Toxicology, Trace Metals analysis, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Ante-natal Down's Syndrome Screening, Newborn screening, Metabolic Biochemistry and Cholinesterase investigations. The Blood Sciences department of Severn pathology is located at Southmead hospital in Bristol. The Blood Sciences Department comprises of Haematology & Transfusion, Immunology & Immunogenetics and Clinical Biochemistry, providing comprehensive services to local primary and secondary care, as well at some regional and national services.
All the disciplines within Blood Sciences are committed to providing a high quality service for all its users and are UKAS accredited medical laboratories.

Main duties of the job
The main duties are:-
- To assist in the supervision, training and teaching of trainee biomedical scientists, associate practitioners, newly qualified staff, medical staff and other healthcare professionals as required.
- To receive and process samples submitted to the Department in accordance with laboratory policies and protocols.
- To interpret and act upon results in accordance with laboratory policies.
- Communicate with patients, clinicians, laboratory and nursing staff from North Bristol Trust and other NHS organisations regarding samples required, appropriateness of tests and provision of results.
- To maintain a high level of professional competence in the performance of all tests and investigations carried out in the section.
- To assist in research and development projects as required.

We are looking to recruit a motivated and dynamic individual who will work within the current team in the Specialist Biochemistry section.
This includes training for other healthcare professionals and Biomedical scientists who may rotate through the section. The successful applicant will be expected to work with the current team to support the on-going service provisions, including the antenatal and newborn screening programmes and in the development of assays for service progression. The candidate will have experience of using either gas chromatography, tandem mass spectrometery or GCMS.
A broad range of experience in a Biochemistry discipline will be essential along with a proven scientific and professional record and ability to work well as part of a team, as well as experience of training and supervision of staff. There will be an expectation to cover the newborn screening read rota and the Toxicology out of hours rota, this includes bank holidays.
Applicants must be HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist and have a postgraduate qualification equivalent to the IBMS Specialist portfolio or MSc. A training qualification, such as the IBMS certificate in expert practice would also be desirable
