We are excited to offer the role of Specialty Manager in the Medicine Division, responsible for Inpatient Flow and Medical Staffing.

The position offers a varied and interesting workload including active participation in the daily divisional Inpatient Flow management process, directly liaising with the Medicine Matrons/Ward teams and Clinical Site team. As well as involvement in Division wide projects and allocation of Medical Staffing/planning for each changeover of Drs in training.

The successful candidate will already be working in operational management with a proven track record of success and be seeking to take their skills to the next level with opportunities to improve and transform both Inpatient Flow, Complex Discharge planning and Medical Staffing for the Division.

The key to success in this role will be a proven ability to work closely with the Clinical Staff and managers both within the Division of Medicine and wider Trust to ensure strong leadership and operational management. The post holder will be a source of information and support to the rest of the Medicine Management Team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a key member of, and work closely with, the Division Management Team, and will contribute fully to the overall management and development of the Medicine Division at North Bristol NHS Trust.

The role will be accountable for leading and managing an identified portfolio of key inpatient and medical workforce functions within the Division, ensuring achievement of relevant performance targets and strategic objectives, ensuring the delivery of high-quality clinical services.

The post holder will need to build and maintain effective relationships with staff across the Division, the wider NBT team and external partners / stakeholders to ensure continued provision of safe, effective and timely services.

The post holder will be expected to provide leadership for workforce, finance, performance and will undertake various projects as required within the Division. There will also be a requirement to contribute to annual business cycles such as capacity and demand modelling, business planning and medical workforce planning.

  • Provide leadership and support for all staff within the portfolio of work being managed by the post holder, namely the Medical Staffing Coordinator and Medical Staffing Administrator.
  • Ensure the highest possible quality of patient care (clinical and non-clinical) through the development of effective teamwork and in particular through the empowerment of the Lead Clinicians, Senior Nurses (Matrons) and specialist nurses.
  • Maintain a clear strategic direction for the clinical service that is both owned by all staff groups and consistent with the overall objectives of the Division and Trust.
  • Participate in service development and the creation of robust service level agreements as part of the commissioning process.
  • Contribute to the Division Clinical Governance agenda and ensure that robust arrangements are maintained.
  • Focus on addressing key workforce issues, including recruitment and retention, training and development and flexible working. This will involve workforce planning and role redesign to incorporate common core competencies and skills to meet changing multi-agency service delivery models.
  • Ensure patient and user involvement in the evaluation and redesign of services
  • Ensure that appropriate systems are in place to closely monitor and deliver relevant performance targets.
  • Exert tight financial control over the budget using effective delegation of responsibility to ward/department budget holders and the engagement of clinicians in financial issues.
  • Delivery of designated Division-wide savings project/s.
  • Provide clear direction on modernisation and improvement of patient services.
  • Investigate and respond to comments/complaints in line with Trust policy and take appropriate action to address any issues arising.
  • Participate in the planning and management of capital projects, as required.
