Job summary

This post offers an exciting opportunity for a year of dedicated sub-speciality clinical experience in Pleural Disease and would be suited to a Respiratory Trainee as out-of-programme experience during specialist training or as post-CCT experience. The pleural team at Southmead runs a specialist service to the patients of North Bristol, hosts the regional mesothelioma MDT and is one of the leading centres for pleural disease research in the country. The fellow will be an integral part of the pleural team supported by five consultants, 1 pleural clinic fellows (THIS POST), 1 pleural research fellow, pleural specialty nurses and administrator.

This post will provide training and experience in advanced pleural disease (including acute and chronic patient management, pleural interventions and mesothelioma). The fellow would be expected to attend pleural and mesothelioma clinics, weekly pleural and mesothelioma MDTs and weekly pleural procedure list.

Applicants must have competence at primary operator level thoracic ultrasound (or equivalent), pleural aspiration and chest drain insertion.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertaking and supporting the pleural admission avoidance service
  • Routine outpatient pleural clinic (1 per week)
  • Attending the weekly regional mesothelioma and pleural MDTs
  • Gaining training and experience in advanced pleural procedures (Thoracic ultrasound, indwelling pleural catheters and thoracoscopy),
  • Providing in-reach advice for inpatients with pleural disease
  • Contributing to pleural teaching, audit, quality improvement and research.
  • The post holder will participate (as a 0.5 slot) in the acute medical rota.

Directorate

This post will involve work within the Medicine Division and an overall governance responsibility to Respiratory Medicine.

The postholder is managerially accountable to the Clinical Directors of the medicine directorate, Dr Jarrod Richards and Dr Ella Chaudhuri.

The Specialty Lead post is currently vacant.

The General Manager is Nicola Alfonsi.

The post holders Supervising Consultants will be Dr Amelia Clive and Professor Nick Maskell, supported by other consultants contributing to the pleural service at Southmead Hospital.

Learning Objectives

Sub-speciality, registrar grade experience in the management of pleural disease and mesothelioma

Clinical experience

The post will provide 12 months of dedicated sub-speciality experience in Pleural Disease and mesothelioma and would be suited to a Respiratory Trainee as out-of-programme experience during specialist training or as post-CCT experience.

Alternatively, applications would be welcomed from candidates able to perform at registrar level, who are in possession of full MRCP(UK) or equivalent, and who may be contemplating a career in respiratory medicine.

The post holder must have BTS primary operator ultrasound competence (or equivalent) and be independently competent in pleural aspiration and chest drain insertion.

The post holder will be an integral member of the pleural clinical team, providing in-reach advice for inpatients, undertaking and coordinating the admission clinics and routine outpatient clinics (1-2 clinics per week), training in advanced pleural procedures (IPC and thoracoscopy), alongside attending multidisciplinary team meetings and supporting the diagnosis and care for patients with pleural disease.

The post holder will participate (as a 0.5 slot) in the acute medical rota.

You will be supervised by Dr Amelia Clive and Prof Nick Maskell, alongside 3 other consultants who run the specialist pleural clinics and will work together with our highly skilled specialist nurses, clinical research fellows and admin team.

Teaching

The role will involve teaching pleural interventions to our pleural nursing team, ward staff and junior doctors and supporting training of the wider respiratory team in pleural disease management.

Courses/Training/Journal/Clubs/Lunchtime meetings

You will be encouraged to actively participate in audit, quality improvement and research relevant to pleural disease. As a research focused department, there will be opportunities to contribute to clinical research projects and service development.

There will be ample opportunities for formal development and training. There is a weekly pleural educational meeting, weekly general respiratory teaching and monthly respiratory governance meetings. Attendance at the pleural and mesothelioma MDT will also be part of the post holders job plan.

Allocated funding is available for study leave.

You will be entitled to 27 days on first appointment to the NHS. After 5 years completed service in the NHS you will receive 32 days annual leave.
