An exciting new opportunity has arisen within the South West Genomics Laboratory Hub at Bristol for a Consultant Clinical Scientist in the Solid Tumour and Inherited Cancer team. This is a new Consultant post due to service expansion.
Main duties of the job
To act in a Consultant Clinical Scientist capacity for the Solid Tumour and Inherited Cancer services for the South West Genomic Laboratory Hub.
The post holder will have overall leadership the Solid Tumour section of the Cancer Genomics team, developing services in line with the requirements of the SWGLH and National Genomics Test Directory. The post holder will provide Consultant level clinical advice, clinical liaison and authorising, and will deputise for the lead Consultant in Cancer for aspects of Cancer service strategy and management. The post holder will lead on specific projects contributing to service strategy and management. As a member of senior leadership team the post holder will also contribute to the wider strategic direction of BGL and the SWGLH Cancer Genomics services under the overall direction of the Head of Cancer Genomics and the Head of Department.
Possession of FRCPath is essential, as is significant experience in cancer and in particular solid tumour genomics services and strategic experience in service development and performance.
The successful candidates will be expected to work 37 1/2 hours per week full-time over 7 days a week, including participation in regular weekend and out of hours working. Services are currently configured to enable a combination of remote working as well as working on site, although significant onsite presence is expected with this role. Part time working will be considered.

As a Consultant Clinical Scientist acting as an independent practitioner:
- To actively participate in the strategic direction, development and management of a fully integrated laboratory genetics service including service redesign, innovation and translational research, in collaboration with the Head of Department, Cancer Consultant lead, scientific colleagues, clinicians, senior managers and other users of the service
- To deploy all of the competences required of a Registered Clinical Scientist to diagnose genetic disease
- To be responsible for and provide clinical and scientific leadership in the Solid Tumour and Inherited Cancer service, accountable to the Cancer consultant lead and Head of Department for the service provided and the staff therein
- Act in a Consultant capacity for all aspects of the work of the Department, providing clinical liaison and a high level of scientific knowledge, skill and expertise to national, local and Trust service users.
- To provide clinical liaison and a very high level of scientific knowledge, skill and expertise across a broad range of investigations
- The post holder will exercise autonomy for his/her own work and that of the division under the overall supervision of the Consultant Cancer Lead.
- To deputise for the Head of Department in his/her absence, as appropriate jointly with other Consultant Clinical Scientists and heads of section for designated duties, and represent the laboratory as required
