The South West Genomics laboratory hub (SW GLH) has an exciting new opportunity for a practice educator lead to join a small education team embedded within the laboratory teams on either the Bristol or Exeter laboratory sites. The successful applicants will be based on one site but will be expected to work across both sites to support deliver of a cohesive training programme and development opportunities for genomics laboratory staff. The successful applicants will work closely together and provide cover for each other.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicants will:

  • Work between the national Genomics Training Academy (GTAC) and SW GLH to support workforce transformation, training and education with programmes for upskilling genomics staff at all levels, in accordance with national priorities.
  • Provide line management and mentoring for trainees; GLH clinical science and bioinformatics STPs, clinical scientists (equivalence route) and genomic technologists.
  • Develop and deliver local and national genomic educational content, working with GTAC, partner organisations and SW GLH colleagues ensuring standardised training across the SWGLH and nationally.
  • Work and liaise regionally/nationally with key stakeholders; other GLHs, GEP/HEE, NHS England, the National School of Healthcare Science, the Association for Clinical Genomic Science and others.
  • The post holder will exercise considerable autonomy for his/her own work under the overall supervision of the GLH Operational Director (Dr Maggie Williams) and GTAC Faculty lead, with support from the GLH Medical Director (Prof Emma Baple) and Exeter Head of Laboratory (Dr Andrew Parrish)
  • To be the point of reference signposting expert knowledge/support promoting equitable access to development opportunities

About us

With a scientific and technical staff of over 250, the SWGLH provides a rare disease and cancer genomic testing service for the South West of England and provides specialist national and international services in rapid whole genome sequencing for acutely unwell babies and children, inherited cardiac conditions, renal genomics, neurogenetics and diabetes and endocrinology genomics testing. Highly successful SW GLH led national educational MDTs for rapid genome sequencing and renal genomics, support these national services and our clinical test requestors. Both laboratories benefit from co-location with academic facilities with the University of Bristol Learning and Research Centre in the Trust Science Quarter, and the Research Innovation Learning and Development Centre in Exeter, providing opportunities for academic collaborations in both education and research.

SWGLH is fully committed to the provision of high quality training at all levels, both laboratories are accredited training centres. A national virtual Genomics Training Academy (GTAC) is now established to support innovation, delivery and standardisation. The SW GLH is leading the development of the GTAC online education programme on genomic variant interpretation for rare and inherited conditions comprising of a series of webinars and workshops, which the successful applicant will have the opportunity to become involved with.
