Cossham Dialysis Unit is a 24-station outpatient satellite haemodialysis unit here at the Cossham hospital site. We are open 6 days a week Monday to Saturday 06:30- 1900 working long days. We provide haemodialysis treatment to our local dialysis population. We provide renal care of the highest standard.

You will be joining a friendly, professional nursing team. Working with a registered nurse you will provide haemodialysis treatment for a group of patients each day.

We will support your ongoing career development and provide a significant orientation period to teach you how to dialyse and care for our patients.

Renal experience is useful but not essential.

Main duties of the job

In this role;

  • You will work under the indirect supervision of a registered nurse on shift
  • You will have responsibility for a caseload of patients each shift undertaking the patient's pre dialysis assessment, setting up the dialysis machine and connecting the patient, checking the patient's observations during their treatment, disconnecting the patient from the dialysis machine and carrying out post dialysis care.
  • Complete all patient documentation each treatment
  • Carry out routine equipment checks daily
  • Contribute to keeping the Dialysis unit tidy, clean, and help to maintain stock levels
  • Support the registered nurses with named patient responsibilities
  • Opportunity to support the registered nurse with link role responsibilities e.g. diabetes, falls prevention, infection control

Job responsibilities

  • Support registered nursing staff in the provision of basic nursing care to patients by assisting patients with required needs and carry out haemodialysis treatment.
  • Line and prime machine in preparation for dialysis.
  • Carry out routine preparation of patients for dialysis treatment.
  • Check weight and blood pressure; calculate fluid removal required for that treatment.
  • Be able to use vascular access under the supervision of the registered nurse whilst maintaining patient safety.
  • Commence and discontinue dialysis under the supervision of the registered nurse.
  • Report any changes in patient condition to the nurse in charge for assessment and review.
  • Monitor and document the patients observations throughout the treatment procedure.
  • Help to promote and maintain a clean and comfortable environment
  • Help to ensure unit stock levels are maintained
  • Contribute towards a team approach to patient care, in conjunction with nursing colleagues, medical staff and professions allied to renal medicine.
  • Always ensure courtesy and respect.
  • Contribute to accurate written and computerised documentation relevant to patient care always ensuring confidentiality of patient information e.g., fluid charts, care plans, recording of weight and dialysis prescriptions.
  • Maintain personal standards of hygiene and always use universal precautions to limit cross infection.
  • After completion of appropriate training, prepare patients for and undertake agreed clinical activities such as:
    • Minor dressings (not applicable in A&E)
    • Management of continence
    • Obtain specimens as required
    • Blood sugar analysis
  • Assist with the provision of patient refreshments each session as required
