Healthcare Scientist (Band 6) - Permanent: Due expanding demand for diagnostic genomics testing
Applications are invited from motivated and enthusiastic individuals with relevant qualifications and laboratory experience. Training will be provided where required, however applicants must be eligible for registration in the future following training though the AHCS certificate of attainment.
With a scientific and technical staff of over 100, the BGL site of the SWGLH is housed in new state of the art Pathology laboratories in North Bristol NHS Trust. BGL is a fully integrated Genomics Laboratory providing comprehensive Cancer and Rare Inherited Disease Genomic testing to the South West with extensive specialist services attracting a large number of national/international referrals. BGL has a strong R&D programme and also benefits from co-location with the University of Bristol Learning and Research Centre in the Trust Science Quarter.
BGL is fully committed to the provision of high quality training at all levels, through MSC STP and Higher Specialist Scientific Training (HSST), and ACS certificate of attainment academic partnerships
Full time 37.5 hours per week full-time over seven days of the week. Part time and job share considered. There are excellent opportunities for progression for qualified and motivated applicants.
Main duties of the job
To apply scientific and clinical skills within aspects of a section of a laboratory or designated work area delivering to nationally accepted standards with appropriate technical support the genetics service provided by the Bristol Genetics Laboratory.
The post holder will be expected to work on a rotational basis in any section of the genetics laboratory undertaking genomic tests, analysing genomic data and preparing patient reports. The role will also involve clinical liaison and aspects of research and development, quality management and quality improvement

- A good first degree in Genetics or Biological Science. Higher qualification desirable
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience of a wide range of laboratory genetics techniques and their clinical application and interpretation
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work both individually and as part of a team to deliver high quality diagnostic services to clinical timelines
- Preparing for or eligible for HCPC registration including eligibility for training through the ACS certificate of attainment.

- To implement laboratory procedures for sample receipt, processing, IQC, analysis, checking, interpretation, preparation of reports (both standard and complex) and reporting of results.
- In partnership with others, to be responsible for the accuracy, timeliness and appropriateness of a variety of routine and non-routine genetic tests.
- To correctly interpret and explain results with advice on further action for patient or family members, including calculation of risk and use of appropriate literature and online resources and databases as appropriate, within relevant professional guidelines and subject to supervision from senior staff.
- Authorisation of simple administrative reports such as DNA banking/export.
- To communicate scientific data at local, national and International meetings and in the literature under the direction of senior staff.
- To provide advice to other staff and to clinicians and other health care professionals on the tests and test result interpretation in appropriate cases (routine/complex) and offer clinical advice on sample requirements, interpretation of test results.
