Waste Services - PST Band 2 at Southmead Hospital
A position for a Waste level porter - portering operative has arisen within FM Waste Services at Southmead Hospital for 37.5 hours a week.
The shifts are 6am to 2pm and 2pm to 10pm, working a rotation of these two shift patterns over a 9-week rolling rota. Weekends are included.
- The candidate should be able to work on their own initiative and have an understanding of Waste Services within an NHS environment.
- The successful candidate for this service should be able to organise themselves and prioritise their workload for the day effectively, in line with service needs.
- You will be responsible for clearing clinical and non- clinical waste streams from waste holds on the levels & other departments around the hospital.
- You will be responsible for clearing dirty linen cages from waste holds on the levels & other departments around the hospital.
- You will be responsible for the sending & receiving of AGV bulk bins and cages, using the card system.
- We are a customer focused team, therefore clear communication skills are required, as you will be working & communicating with the wards & departments.
- You will report directly to Waste Services Supervisor.

Main duties of the job
To work as part of the operational team responsible for providing a comprehensive patient support service in the hospital environment. This will involve carrying out the following Facilities Management functions:
- The primary function is the movement of patients, consumable products, waste, furniture, medical equipment, gasses, beds, linen and mattresses etc.
- The cleaning of all Portering equipment, mopping of spillages and responding to Major incident

Main Responsibilities of the Job
- Carrying out daily duties as instructed by PST Team Leader and /or the FM Duty Manager
- Collection of soiled linen from wards and departments to be taken to the designated waste hold
- Delivery and collection of medical gas cylinders to wards and departments and the fitting of applicable regulators. Also responsible for changing cylinders in designated gas manifold plant rooms
- Delivery and collection of hospital supplies as directed and where appropriate, complete the relevant paperwork. Supplies may include, but are not limited to; post, medical records, medical equipment, pharmaceutical product etc.
- Transportation of furniture to and from wards and departments
- Responsible for reporting all items of equipment, spillages, defects and debris left in corridors and general circulation to Team Leader
- Drive various types of vehicles i.e. vans, lorries, ambulance and electric trucks (where relevant licences are held) if required
- Collecting waste bins/carts /from AGV stations and movement around the hospital and designated waste store
- Operating waste compactors, balers and tippers in line with operational procedures
- Correct labelling, weighing and cleaning of waste bins/carts
- Consigning appropriate waste streams
- Collection of waste not suitable for AGV transit i.e. Obsolete furniture
- Reporting bin/cart contamination, faults to the FM team leader
- Assist with the collection of goods received via AGV ensuring AGV cages are stored in their designated location
- Assist with receipt & distribution of product via AGV delivery schedules as required and as directed by the PST Team Leader (e.g. linen, waste streams, consumable products, patient samples etc.)
- Assist with delivery of products manually in the event of AGV failure / non-compliance as directed by PST Team Leader
- The cleaning of all Portering equipment, mopping of spillages (not bodily fluids) and response to Major incident, which would include carrying out activity that would normally be carried out by other colleagues
- Ensuring that the waste hold areas are kept clean, tidy and well organised as required
- Ensuring that correct and safe methods of work are employed at all times with extra care shown to the safety of patients, staff and visitors
- Reporting any accidents/dangerous occurrences to the PST Team Leader and participating in the completion of all related accident form paperwork (AIMS)
- Attend relevant statutory and non-statutory training.
- Carry out duties in accordance with departmental training and Trust policies and codes of practice
- Completion of timesheets and work logs /schedules or other attendance system as required
- Carry out standard vehicle checks i.e. tyres, lights, brakes and complete relevant paperwork
- Loading AGV roll cage, ensuring the cage has the correct AGV transporter cards as directed by PST Team leader
