Principal Clinical Scientist in Cancer Genomics (Band 8B)

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the South West Genomics Laboratory Hub at Bristol for a Principal Clinical Scientist in the Rare Disease team. We are seeking a motivated, highly qualified and ambitious individual to play a key leadership role within our busy and friendly team.
Main duties of the job
The postholder will be a key member of operational management team responsible for operational and strategic direction of a section of the Rare Disease team, managing and accountable for multiple areas of service (sub-sections) and staff. They will also provide expert clinical advice, clinical liaison and quality input and will be required to deputise for the lead Consultant in Rare Disease for relevant aspects of service strategy and management. The post holder will also lead on specific development projects.
Successful applicants must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a clinical scientist and have an upper second or first class honours degree and/or higher degree in a relevant scientific subject. Possession of full FRCPath is essential (candidates in possession of Part One and actively working towards Part Two are also encouraged to apply). Good communication, team working and supervisory skills are also essential, as is significant experience in team and service management in a diagnostic setting. Extensive experience of the scientific and interpretative aspects of the molecular diagnosis of rare disease (e.g. NGS, WGS, genomic copy number analysis) is highly desirable.
The successful candidate will be expected to work 37 1/2 hours per week full-time over 7 days a week, including participation in regular weekend and out of hours working.

- To actively participate in the strategic direction and development of a fully integrated laboratory genetics service including service redesign, innovation and transnational research, in collaboration with the Head of Rare Disease and Head of Department, scientific colleagues, clinicians, senior managers and other stakeholders.
- To employ all of the competences required of a State Registered Clinical Scientist to diagnose genetic disease.
- To be the scientific and operational head of the sub-section, accountable to the Head of Department for the service provided and the staff therein.
- To provide clinical liaison and a very high level of scientific knowledge, skill and expertise across a broad range of investigations.
- The post holder will exercise considerable autonomy for his/her own work and that of the section under the overall supervision of the Head/Deputy Head of Department and Head of Rare Disease.
- To deputise for the Head of Rare Disease in his/her absence, either individually or jointly with other heads of section for designated duties, and represent the laboratory as required.
- To lead in the co-ordination and delivery of training and development for the department under the overall direction of the Head of Department.
