Are you a Sonographer with experience of working in the NHS, looking for a new opportunity to develop advanced practice?
Our highly skilled team of Sonographers have an exciting opening available to work across both obstetric and non-obstetric services.
With a varied and interesting workload, in specialties such as general, gynaecology, MSK, head and neck, baby hips ultrasound, and sonographer lead scans for all inpatients, including ITU, acute same day emergency care and renal transplant scans in theatre, you could have the opportunity to extend your training into new areas, including Advanced Practitioner roles. Secondments would be considered as we understand the mutual advantages cross department working can provide.

Successful post holders must hold all of these:
- Post-graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound or equivalent.
- BSc in Radiography or equivalent.
- A current Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration or be on the RCT (Register of Clinical Technologists).
- Have experience of working as an independent reporting sonographer in the NHS (or similar size/type of organisation)
Main duties of the job
- This role requires you to have a good scanning technique, the ability to process complex information, good written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to work with colleagues from Band 2 support staff to consultants, keeping the patient's best interest at the centre of what you do.
- Ultrasound lists take place at Southmead Hospital, as well as in community sites in Cossham Hospital, Clevedon Hospital and Yate Westgate Centre.
- You will be able to competently scan and independently report ultrasound scans, to the level required in the NHS, including complex information. Training will be given in specific areas as required.
- Vetting ultrasound requests
- Be actively involved in training trainee sonographers and registrars.
- Be involved in and supporting ultrasound audits and QA.
- Attend clinical governance mornings for training and feedback interesting cases.
- Be involved in CPD, including attending courses as needed.
About us
We currently have a team of 18 Sonographers, 4 specialised in MSK, 4 in head and neck and 4 in baby hips ultrasound. We will have 7 trainee Sonographers next year, 5 in general and early pregnancy ultrasound and 2 in obstetrics only. We are implementing new technologies such as CEUS and 3D transvaginal ultrasound to improve patient care and outcome.
We have a friendly, diverse team of Sonographers who strive to work to high standards, supporting each other, whilst keeping the patient at the centre of all we do. All of our lists are booked according to Society of Radiographers examination times guidance to help support you in a happy, healthy work environment.
Our award-winning Brunel Building includes a large rooftop terrace, staff only zone, with an outdoor seating area with views across the city. Working in a new modern building, we recognise that staff enjoy comfortable, light filled areas to work, and rest is important.
We understand the importance and value of investing in our team at NBT and regularly send Sonographers to BMUS, have regular clinical governance mornings to feedback peer review audits, and hold teaching sessions from radiologists/ specialist consultants and staff meetings. We recently developed and appointed a Lead Practice Educator and General Ultrasound specific roles (both Band 8a).

- The role requires individual accountability for independently performing and reporting routine and complex ultrasound examinations in accordance with the ultrasound departmental guidelines and relevant professional body's code of conduct.
- Understanding the clinical significance of ultrasound findings in the context of the clinical question and patients clinical history, reflecting this in the report.
- Ability to analyse relevant clinical information, including other test results and use this to perform and / or adapt the techniques required to undertake a satisfactory examination and diagnosis.
- Provide advice on future patient management to clinicians and / or relatives where appropriate
- Ability to communicate scan findings directly to patients and clinicians in an empathetic and sensitive manner. Occasionally having to impart highly distressing information and unpleasant news sensitively and providing counselling and reassurance.
- To maintain the workflow within the hospital of the inpatient workload and to help maintain the six-week referral to scan target for the outpatient workload.
