Job summary
Applications are invited a full-time permanent Imaging Porters to join our team at North Bristol NHS Trust. You will be working 37.5hrs per week, working various shifts supporting 24/7 service on a rotational basis.
This post is based at the Brunel Hospital, Southmead Hospital in the Imaging department.
You will need to be educated to NVQ 2, GCSE C (including English and Maths) equivalent or have relevant experience. You must possess good communication skills both over the phone and face to face and have a flexible approach to work.
You will be required to take ownership of your own workload as well as being an integral part of a larger team. Being a team player is important in this role to ensure that department's targets are met.
Your main duties will be to transport and assist patients to and from the Imaging department/wards in line with the service level agreements.
You will be required to assist with the transfer of patients onto the examination tables from chairs and beds as well as other portering duties as and when requested.
Please be aware that this is a physical role involving a vast amount of walking in the Brunel Building.

To work as part of the Imaging portering team, providing a responsive, high-quality service to patients and staff within North Bristol NHS Trust.
Carrying out Imaging portering duties which will include the transfer of patients, delivery and collection of equipment, movement of confidential records, and delivery of supplies and specimens to the pathology department.

Job responsibilities
- Transport patients in a safe manner as required, via wheelchair, beds and trolleys to and from the Imaging department.
- Escort, when necessary, walking patients to and from wards and departments.
- Observe and maintain the comfort of the patient in their care at all times.
- Ensure that correct and safe systems of work are employed at all times with extra care shown to the safety of patients.
- Show care and attention to all patients especially those that are concerned and/or disadvantaged.
- Participate in urgent transfer of critically ill patients between departments, wards and I.C.U
- You will at times work in extremely emotional circumstances where you will be expected to show understanding and sympathy.
- Transportation of patients and their personal possessions between wards and departments including collection of records, and assist in the administration of medical gases under supervised instruction from a clinically trained member of staff i.e. some patients will receive oxygen during transfer
- Collect and deliver post etc between departments.
- Undertake recognized checking procedure when collecting patients from wards and departments
- Assist in the transfer patients (PAT slide) between Radiology couch and trolley or bed.
- Assist radiographers and nurses staff in the physical movement of patients i.e. to sit patients up/ lie them down for examinations.
- Delivery of specimens from Radiology to relevant pathology departments
- Checking of all wheel chairs and trolleys used for roadworthiness and reporting any faults found to the appropriate department. Carrying out basic maintenance of these trolleys.
- Receiving and giving clear concise instructions with other members of the portering team and other departments.
- Be aware of the security requirements for special needs patients. Be able to liaise with wards and/or security to ensure the ongoing safety of at risk persons. To be aware of possible security situations as they develop and inform the relevant department.
- The movement of furniture or other equipment as requested.
- Delivery and collection of expensive Radiology equipment between departments, wards, and theatre.
- Transfer of medical records, x-ray films and other confidential records throughout the site.
- Collection of medical gas cylinders, correct connection of cylinders and return empty cylinders to storage area complete with relevant accounting paperwork.
- Cleaning of equipment and trolleys as required ensuring they are to infection control standards.
- Carry out audits of equipment and record as requested.
- Reporting all incidents if injury and any near miss situations involving themselves or other to their line manager/supervisor and completion of the necessary paperwork
- Accept responsibility for the correct use of equipment that is in your control.
- To respond to emergency/security situations as required
- Participate in Annual Appraisal reviews with nominated appraiser
- To carry out any other duties as required that are commensurate with grade and nature of the services
- Co-operate in the introduction of new technology and of new methods of working.
- Participate in annual updates in Manual Handling, Resuscitation, Infection Control etc.
