This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced nurse to join our Trauma and orthopaedic Specialist Nursing team. Currently the post is for 30 hours with the potential to become full time. As a key member of a small team, the successful applicant will work closely with Ortho-geriatric team, Trauma and Orthopaedic team, orthopaedic theatres, Fracture clinic and Trauma wards. North Bristol NHS Trust is a Regional Centre for Major Trauma.
This will also be considered as a Secondment Role.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will need to be enthusiastic with excellent communication and computer skills, and possess the ability to learn and develop quickly, working autonomously and as part of a team in a busy environment.
The post holder will be expected to work with the Orthogeriatric team and undertake Trauma Coordinating role as required.
Orthogeriatric role involves working with Senior Specialist Nurses/Geriatricians reviewing hip fracture and fragility fracture patients. The post holder will help to collate information for National Hip Fracture database (NHFD) including starting the NHFD forms and doing 4AT'S on post-operative Hip Fracture patients as part of Best Practice Tariff (BPT).
Trauma co-ordinating role involves good communication within Orthopaedics; including management of patients going to theatre; fracture clinic; and trauma wards.

Job responsibilities
- To develop, lead, innovate and expand the Trauma Co-ordinator role within the Musculoskeletal Directorate to establish this as a key link role in managing the patient journey through NBT.
- To ensure that wherever clinically appropriate, patients meet all criteria for the best practice tariff for fractured neck of femur including less than 36 hours before surgery and orthogeriatric input. Responsible for taking action with relevant clinicians and managers and escalate appropriately to minimise any perceived risks to patients.
- Provide a high quality Trauma service by working collaboratively with all members of the MDT by attending daily trauma meetings and participating in the consultant led trauma ward round.
- Liaise with wards and theatres regarding list order and starvation requirements on a daily basis and ensure that all relevant staff are informed of any changes to the trauma list. Be proactive in ensuring patients and staff caring for them are kept fully informed too.
- Liaise with the surgeons, theatre staff and anaesthetists ensure that Trauma operating lists are utilised effectively. Be accountable for raising issues and concerns with Directorate management team.
- Liaise with the Orthogeriatricians, anaesthetists and surgeons ensure patients are prioritised by clinical priority also taking into consideration the availability and grade of surgeons and anaesthetists.
- Ensure that all Trauma operating lists are realistic and viable in terms of being achievable. Responsible for suggesting amendments and following these through and escalating urgent problems to senior manager.
- Liaise verbally with ED, Orthopaedic Outpatients and bed manager, to ensure early knowledge of incoming trauma and emergency patients in order to minimise delay in transfer to inpatient beds
- Liaise with bed manager to assess and decide for sign off by relevant clinicians which trauma patients who can be transferred to outlying wards and to identify availability of suitable beds for incoming trauma.
- To actively participate in the implementation of local/national policy and service development and engaging with relevant colleague, particularly medical staff, to ensure their views are incorporated and taken forward.
- To participate as required with research/audit and development relating to Trauma orthopaedic management/services.
- To provide specialist knowledge and act as a resource for staff giving an expert level of advice and care for patients who need to be treated by the Trauma service.
- To provide counselling and support for patients and their families as appropriate and where required act as an advocate for the patient within the Trauma speciality.
- To demonstrate advanced clinical competence and a knowledge base beyond those associated with conventional nursing roles.
