Job summary
This is a fixed-term, full-time consultant post in the Plastic Surgery Department with a major interest in Orthoplastic surgery. The post is advertised for a twelve month duration, commencing on or after 1st October 2023. The successful applicant will join a team of plastic surgeons with an interest in Orthoplastic and lower limb surgery that treat adult and paediatric patients. The ideal candidate would be able to contribute to the trauma and elective workload for the specialist hand service.
North Bristol NHS Trust is one of two designated Major Trauma Centres in South West England, supporting the Severn region. The Plastic Surgery team work closely with colleagues in Trauma and Orthopaedics as part of the Major Trauma centre, providing adult and paediatric specialist Orthoplastic surgical expertise at North Bristol NHS Trust and Bristol Children's Hospital.
The established Ortho-plastics team provides high standards of care to acute and chronic extremity cases, treating over 200 acute adult and 15-20 severe injuries in children each year. The successful candidate will join the existing Orthoplastics team of consultants; Mr Umraz Khan (Service Lead), Mr Thomas Wright, Wing Cmdr George Wheble and Mr Thomas Chapman.
Main duties of the job
The work of the Plastic Surgery Department covers a wide range of congenital and acquired conditions including skin cancer, hand surgery, lower limb trauma, breast reconstruction, head and neck malignancy, sarcoma, burns service and laser therapy. Combined clinics are held in association with other specialists including head and neck surgery, Ortho-Plastics, oncologists and dermatology. Specialist clinics include; hands, pigmented lesions, sarcoma and breast reconstruction.
There are dedicated plastics and burns general anaesthetic operating theatres and three local anaesthetic operating theatres, with 24-hour access to general emergency theatres where out of hours trauma cases are undertaken. The postholder will be provided with secretarial support and office accommodation, which will be shared with other members of the consultant team.
There will be an on-call commitment to delivering an emergency adult and paediatric plastic surgery service and applicants must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in general plastic surgery. The successful candidate will join a further 22 consultants who offer plastic surgery and burns service to patients from the northern part of the South West region. The department has dedicated emergency plastic surgery beds on Gate 33A, including seven burns unit beds, and shares elective capacity with other specialties on Gate 7A. There is access to ITU and HDU beds.

- Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent (for non-UK applicants)
- Maintain Full registration with the GMC Must have CCT Plastic Surgery and have been entered on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of the appointment. Specialist registrars that do not hold a CCT must be due to be awarded one within 6 months of the interview date
Desirable
- Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS).
Training & Experience
Essential
- Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent). .
- Minimum of 6 years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training, three years as a Senior Registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential.
- Training in diagnosis and treatment of routine plastic surgery conditions.
- Experience, training and interest in Orthoplastic and Microvascular Reconstruction
- Experience and training in surgical management of common, non-specialised conditions in children, including trauma.
- Familiarity with the management of hand trauma
Desirable
- 6-12 microsurgery fellowship in an approved UK or overseas position.
- Experience with Orthoplastics and Limb Trauma
