Job summary

Join us in creating a sustainable future. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Carbon and Energy Manager to join the Strategic Estate Development and Sustainable Health Team at North Bristol NHS Trust. You will have plenty of opportunity to make a big difference to people's lives and be part of a dynamic team both within the Trust and with our partners in the Integrated Care System to meet our shared goal of net zero carbon (NZC) by 2030.

In this role you will be responsible for delivering a comprehensive decarbonisation and energy efficiency strategy. You will have the ability to control the direction of how NBT will decarbonise its buildings and achieve savings through energy efficiency measures. You'll get to work on projects involving the private finance initiative hospital (Brunel), new construction projects and refurbishments with project values from £500k to £8million. You will horizon scan, seek funding opportunities and oversee implementation of projects.

You will work closely with staff within the Estate Team, professional advisors and sub-contractors and in partnership with colleagues in our Integrated Care System.

Main duties of the job

  • Reviewing, updating and delivering the Trust's decarbonisation and energy efficiency strategy.
  • Working with Estate Team colleagues to improve the energy efficiency and the decarbonisation of our existing buildings.
  • Ensuring the Trust is compliant with relevant legislative obligations.
  • Researching solutions, innovations, acting on funding opportunities and developing business cases.
  • Acting as project director in the delivery of NZC and energy projects.
  • Procuring, managing and reporting on energy and utilities contracts of approximately £22m.
  • Acting as a Trust subject matter expert to support staff to understand net zero and energy efficiency and build this into their projects.
  • Line managing carbon and energy staff.

The ideal candidate will have a degree or equivalent in an appropriate field, a minimum of five years relevant post graduate experience to master's level or equivalent and show relevant evidence of ongoing professional development. Project management training or experience is also essential.

You will be able to demonstrate specialist knowledge and implementation of projects in carbon and energy saving disciplines as well as an in-depth understanding of BMS, metering and legislation. You will be adept at presenting and reporting on carbon, energy and utilities data and able to forecast consumption rates and prepare business cases. You will also have influencing, negotiating and interpersonal skills, be a self-starter with high levels of self-motivation.

  • Review, implement, maintain and regularly update a decarbonisation and energy efficiency strategy in line with the Trusts 2030 Net Zero Carbon goal, supporting partner organisation and system strategies.
  • Hold corporate responsibility for the formulation and implementation of carbon reduction and energy policies which will affect Trust and System business processes and will interface with other organisations.
  • Work in collaboration with Trust departments including Estate Management, Capital Planning and Sustainability to identify and quantify a programme or works to reduce the Trusts energy consumption, costs and carbon footprint.
  • Undertake regular research into carbon and energy products, solutions and innovations, presenting findings and developing robust business cases to secure funding approval for individual projects/programmes.
