North Bristol NHS Trust is the largest Trust in the South West region and one of the largest trusts in the country. Last year the Trust treated over 100,000 inpatients, over 35,000 outpatients, 90,000 emergency department patients and helped deliver over 6,000 babies. It employs more than 9,500 staff, has approximately 1,050 inpatient beds and income in excess of £540 million.
The Trust provides Medical, Surgical, Neonatal and Maternity Care for its local population of approximately a million people in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. The Trust also provides regional services in Neurosciences, Orthopaedics, Pathology, Plastic Surgery and Burns, Renal Medicine and Transplant and Urology and is the Major Trauma Centre for the West Country.

Main duties of the job
he health service in Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire is being remodelled to concentrate on acute facilities and where appropriate to provide more care close to patient homes through a network community hospitals and facilities. The Trust recently moved the majority of its acute services to the Brunel Building, regarded as one of the best hospital facilities in Europe, on the Southmead Hospital Site. At Southmead Hospital, we also have our excellent maternity and women's health services, the Bristol Breast Care Centre and the Trust's Severn Pathology service.
As well as Southmead Hospital, the Trust also has Cossham Hospital, in Kingswood, that recently underwent a £19m refurbishment, the Bristol Centre for Enablement, at Cribbs Causeway (Bristol) and the Trust also runs children's community health services across Bristol and South Gloucestershire.
The Trust has University Teaching status and is associated with both the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England.
We are looking for a Clinical Fellow (ST3+) to join us in Respiratory Medicine.
About us
The Division of Medicine includes the Emergency Department and has c.426 beds in the new hospital. Specialty focused wards cover Cardiology, Coronary Care, Respiratory, Infectious Diseases and HIV, Care of the Elderly and Gastroenterology.
The Department of Medicine operates an active postgraduate programme with weekly journal clubs and grand rounds. All the professionals allied to the Department are involved in postgraduate meetings.
Information technology is well advanced in the Trust. Terminals on the wards, offices and clinics enable direct access to laboratory results, e-mail and Medline. NHSnet and Internet access is available.
The post holder is managerially accountable to the Clinical Directors of the Medicine Directorate, Dr Ella Chaudhuri and Dr Jarrod Richards.

Please note that the base could change as a consequence of clinical requirements.
Educational Approval: the post has neither Royal College nor Postgraduate approval for training. The post is educationally sound and well supported, with excellent opportunities for gaining clinical experience in the specialties covered.
Learning Objectives/Specialist Interests
The post could comprises an approximately 80% of direct clinical time working in medical and neurosciences specialties on rotation. The remaining 20% (approx. 2 half days or 1 whole day per week) will be protected for either the development of specialty clinical interests or areas of expertise in support of clinical practice. This is once clear achievable objectives have been established.
These could include:
- Quality Improvement and Audit
- Development of specialty interest
- Teaching & Education including Simulation training
- Clinical Leadership
- Research
Clinical Experience
This is a non-training post but the Clinical Fellows will get wide ranging clinical experience, supervised by consultant medical staff.
Teaching
You will not be expected to take on any formal teaching responsibility. In most of these posts you will be working with Foundation Year doctors so will be supporting them clinically. Help with informal teaching of ward based medical students is encouraged. If you have a particular interest in teaching, we will support you within the constraints of your timetable.
We have vibrant structured programmes of undergraduate and post graduate teaching, including teaching medical support workers (international medical graduates working towards passing PLAB and GMC registration). We would be delighted if you wish to contribute to this within your 20% professional development time.
Courses/Training/Journal/Clubs/Lunchtime meetings
There is a 2-hour teaching session once a week for the Internal Medicine trainee doctors to cover topics from their curriculum. You will be able to attend these teaching sessions if you wish as part of your 20% development time.
There are also 4 regional training days for IMT trainees. Clinical Fellows may be able to attend these meetings.
There are weekly Journal Clubs and departmental meetings. Clinical Fellows will be able to attend these meetings.
You will have a study leave allowance (10 days, allowing for service needs) and a small study leave budget. You will be allocated an Educational Supervisor.
Annual Leave
You will be entitled to 5 weeks and 2 days annual leave pro rata if on point 0-2 of the salary scale or 6 weeks and 2 days annual leave pro rata if on point 03 and above.
