Job summary
The advertised post is for a part-time (10.00 PA) fixed term appointment for maternity leave cover Consultant Neuropathologist in the Department of Neuropathology, North Bristol NHS Trust, starting 23rd October 2023 for 12 months.
Main duties of the job
This is one of three consultant posts in the Department, the other two being those of Professor Kathreena Kurian and Dr Jillian Davis.
The post-holder will have joint responsibility with Professor Kurian and Dr Davis for the provision of all aspects of the neuropathology diagnostic service by the NHS Department of Neuropathology.
The post-holder will be responsible, with colleagues and laboratory staff in the Department, for maintaining high diagnostic standards and for supporting the continuous development of new or improved techniques for the diagnosis and management of neurological disease.
The post-holder will be expected to attend and contribute to clinicopathological conferences and case discussions and to liaise closely with clinical colleagues to provide a high quality diagnostic neuropathology service.

The Neuropathology Department, at Southmead Hospital, is a major part of the Regional Neurosciences Centre. The Neuropathology Department provides the Neurosurgical and Neurological services with diagnostic support and advice on intraoperative and postoperative analysis of biopsies of brain and spinal cord and their coverings; CSF cytology; muscle biopsies; nerve biopsies; and post-mortem brain pathology (including for the dementia service). The Department also supports other users within North Bristol NHS Trust (particularly rheumatology, which uses the muscle biopsy service) and in other Trusts (Paediatric Neurosurgery and Paediatric Neurology at UBHT, and neurologists and rheumatologists within adjacent counties in South West England) and provides support for local and regional coronial and medicolegal services.

Neuropathology Consultant
Essential
- Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council or eligibility for registration within six months of interview
- Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview
- Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists or evidence of equivalent qualification
- The CCT should be in CCT in Neuropathology/ Diagnostic Neuropathology
- Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent)
- Minimum of 5 years of postgraduate experience, including full specialist neuropathology training in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential
- Evidence of up-to-date participation in CPD
- Experience in audit
- Experience of teaching
- Experience of research
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Good interpersonal skills
- Evidence of the ability to work well in a team and to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels

- Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or PhD)
- Additional subspecialty training and experience, e.g. in paediatric neuropathology, muscle pathology, autopsy neuropathology
