Job summary

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated candidates with experience in the outpatient and neurosurgery inpatient care and with a focus on safe and effective patient care. You will be responsible for the preassessment of neurosurgical patients and urgent oncology patients as well as participate in in-patient pathways to facilitate seamless flow of elective patients.

You will be an independent practitioner looking after your own caseload, in conjunction with working within the preassessment team to meet NHS waiting list targets for generic neurosurgical patients as well as urgent / cancer pathway patients within the departmentYou will be teaching and supportingnew / junior staff and will promote a positive learning environment.

You will be expected to provide clinical support, leadership, teaching and role modelling within the clinical area to nursing students.

You will be expected to function effectively in a fast paced and dynamic environment without compromising essential standards of care and professionalism.

You will need to demonstrate commitment to your own personal development and show keen interest in the future development of the profession and pre assessment department.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as part of the existing neurosurgical Advanced nurse practitioner (ANP) team covering the generic pathway which included urgent neuro-oncology patients.
  • Undertake pre-assessment for elective and urgent surgical patients within this pathway. (Deep brain stimulator, brain tumour resection, neuromodulation to name a few).
  • The ANP is at the interface and sustains the continuity of patient care, as planned by the medical staff, across the elective patients (medirooms, critical care, wards) journey and transfer to and from the neurosurgical wards.
  • With the senior surgical team manage the elective patient pathway such as enhanced recovery programme for brain tumour patients and support inpatient flow.
  • Integral role in Neuro-oncology MDT which will serve as an educational route and enhance care provision of patient groups.
  • To provide education and support to patients, relatives/carers, medical and nursing staff.
  • Main point of contact for all elective neurosurgical generic pathway patients following their attendance at the Neurosurgical Preassessment Clinic (NPAC).
  • Work cohesively with the NPAC lead to maintain standards, own competency, regular CPD and flexible with ad hoc clinic requests.
  • Contribute to the directorate and speciality research activity as well as the quality agenda.
  • Positive role model and attitude both within the Directorate, Trust and wider context.

The neurosurgical nurse practitioner service was established in 2001 and has pioneered preassessment clinics. We strongly believe in providing exceptional care to support a robust elective service that caters to a complex range of neurosurgical patients in the South-West of England. You will be working with a very supportive and enthusiastic team who are passionate and strive to make a difference for patients and their families. The role is within the generic service and to mainly cover elective neurosurgical oncology patients. The team comprises of experienced advanced clinical practitioners, and MDT coordinators, with wider links to a friendly medical team, secretaries, CNS's, Anaesthetists and AHP's.
