Biomedical Scientist - Haematology and Blood Transfusion - Band 5

As a Biomedical Scientist you will be trained in all areas of Haematology (Automation, Coagulation, Haemoglobinopathies,) and Blood Transfusion.

The department is housed in a modern, purpose-built laboratory and the successful candidate will be joining a busy but friendly team. We currently have Beckman Coulter DxH900-2S with Digital Morphology, ACL Top 750 Coagulation analysers, Benson's Viscometers for Plasma Viscosity, Sebia Capi3 for glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c/Haemoglobinopathy). The Biorad Variant II analyser is currently used for Antenatal Haemoglobinopathy Screening and we also provide Newborn Screening services for Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia. The Blood Transfusion laboratory uses Griffols Blood Grouping analysers but will change platforms shortly.

The Blood Sciences department is undergoing changes to create a fully tracked automation system. We have accreditation by UKAS under ISO 15189 and are assessed for compliance by MHRA. We are approved by the IBMS as a training laboratory for both the registration portfolio, leading to HCPC registration and specialist portfolios.

Main duties of the job

Severn Pathology's aim is to provide a best in class, high quality, innovative, value for money pathology service that serves the needs of the healthcare market in the South West region. The laboratory facilities accommodate all pathology disciplines including the Blood Sciences, Bristol Genetics Laboratory, a single Bristol Cellular Pathology Service and a combined Microbiology and UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) within one facility.

The post holder under the direction of senior staff will be expected to:

  • Work as part of a team to provide a diagnostic laboratory service in Haematology and Blood Transfusion in accordance with National, Trust and Departmental policies and procedures on a rotational basis in all sections (Automation and Special Haematology and, Blood Transfusion) of the laboratory
  • Participate in the training and development of other staff within the department
  • Participate fully in the department's 24/7 rota system
  • With the senior staff, contribute to the development of services provided to meet the requirements of users.

In this vital role, you will be:

  1. Working in accordance with the Departmental Standard Operating Procedures and assist in the development and review of these as required.
  2. Receiving and analysing samples submitted to the department in accordance with laboratory policies and protocols.
  3. Assisting in the interpretation and technical validation of the analyses in accordance with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  1. Responsible for the performance of compatibility testing and the issue of Blood and Blood Products to patients in routine and emergency situations.
  2. Assisting in the maintenance of the Hospital Blood Banks and the stock control of Blood & Blood Products
  3. Rotating into any area of the department as required.
  4. Participating fully in the departments 24/7 rota service.
  5. Prioritising the completion of urgent requests.
  6. Telephoning important results to an appropriate person when necessary
  7. Responsible for their own work under the supervision of senior laboratory staff
  8. Validating and releasing results to service users as required
  9. Maintaining a high level of professional competence in the performance of all tests and investigations carried out in the department as appropriate
  10. Preparing and ensuring adequate supplies of reagents and consumables
  11. Using consumables and equipment efficiently and safely in accordance with Health & Safety policies
  12. Performing the routine maintenance and cleaning of the equipment with which she/he is working including maintenance records and recording of corrective actions
