Job summary
NBT covers all surgical specialties except cardiaothoracics, ENT and paediatrics. These include general surgery (upper and lower GI), bariatics, urology, orthopaedics (elective primary, revision joint replacement, complex spinal and pelvic surgery as well as trauma), plastics and burns, breast, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynaecology and vascular surgery (including 100 renal transplants annually).The 46 bedded Critical Care Unit is divided into four pods and is situated adjacent to the emergency theatres, emergency department and radiology.2 NBT is a regional centre for a number of specialist services including neurosurgery, renal medicine, plastics, orthopaedics, vascular and is one of the two Major Trauma centres in the SW, servicing the Severn Network, and a Burns centre.The obstetric unit is one of the largest in the UK with over 6,000 deliveries annually, performing 1100 Caesarean sections and 1500 epidurals each year. There is also a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on site. Avon-wide Fertility Services, in partnership with the University of Bristol, are based at Southmead.
The Anaesthetic department is recognised by the Royal College of Anaesthetists and GMC for training at foundation, core and specialist trainee level. It is also recognised by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine at basic, intermediate and advanced level.
Main duties of the job
Diagnosis and anaesthetic management of patients for elective andemergency surgery and other conditions requiring general, regional orlocal anaesthesia and/or sedation.The postholder will be responsible for the clinical management ofpatients under their care, in liaison with consultant colleagues and forcontinuity of care when the postholder or colleagues are absent.In order to maximise efficient use of resources North Bristol undertakeselective and/or urgent surgery after 19.00 on weekdays and atweekends. Post holders are likely to be required to incorporate suchwork into routine job plans and will be expected to adopt a flexible andco-operative approach to such work.Session times are 08.30-12.30, 13.00-17.00 and 17.00-20.00.The post holder may be invited to take a full roll in the on call service atNBT covering all specialites on a 1 in 12 rota.The post-holder will be required to work with and supervise thephysician's assistant.

Study & ResearchThe postholder can request up to a maximum of 30 days study leavewithin a 3-year period (pro rata for part-time posts) as stated in theTerms & Conditions of Service.The Trust is committed to ensuring that support is given for ContinuingMedical Education. The postholder will be required to fulfil therequirements laid down by the relevant Royal College, and to fulfil therequirements for revalidation laid down by the General Medical Council.The postholder will not necessarily be expected to undertake researchhowever opportunities do exist and encouragement is given to developcollaborative projects with other departments within the Trust or with theUniversity of Bristol and the University of the West of England.
