Histology Network Training Officer (Band 7)

Job summary

This role is an opportunity to develop Histology training across the South 2 Network, which covers Gloucester, Bath, Bristol, Yeovil and Taunton. This will involve exploring new training opportunities, training methods and developing links to other training bodies. Furthermore the post holder will support the existing Histology Training Officer based in North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT).

It is a great opportunity for someone with an interest in training to be involved with developing a system that could impact Histology training in South 2 for many years.

Main duties of the job

This post has two elements.

    • 50% within the S2 Pathology network where the post holder will work with regional trainer groups to enhance the training experience of staff and ultimately improve recruitment and retention within the speciality. This might include exploring apprenticeship opportunities, delivering virtual training sessions, developing joint CPD sessions etc
    • 50% as part of the training team within NBT Histology.
    • After 2 years the post will be focused on NBT Histology

About us

The post holder will work day to day with the Training Lead in Histology at NBT and the senior management team. The base for the role will be at NBT. Additionally for the first 2 years the post holder will work with the Network training and workforce team to develop a Network wide strategy.

  1. Coordinate and chair network-wide Histology training meetings
  2. Develop and maintain links to professional bodies (i.e. IBMS, HEE) and Higher Education Institutions
  3. Together with the Histology Management teams, develop the training portfolio for the Histology to meet workforce demands.
  4. Supervise and monitor trainee BMS staff completing the HCPC certificate of competence.
  5. Monitor and support progress of IBMS specialist and other portfolio candidates
  6. Mentor and support apprenticeship candidates
  7. In conjunction with discipline leads ensure the establishment, implementation and maintenance of training and competency programs, including competency re-assessment for all grades of staff within Histology

Qualifications

Essential

  • HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist
  • BSc honours degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent
  • Postgraduate level qualification in Blood Sciences discipline, equivalent to Specialist portfolio or MSc
  • IBMS certificate of expert practice in training or equivalent

Desirable

  • 4+ years of laboratory experience, preferably in Histology
  • Proven training experience
  • Training qualification
  • Ability to lead a team
  • Ability to implement change
