Are you an experienced Midwife with an interest in Diabetes?
We are looking for a professional with a real passion to drive forward and promote excellence in care for women diagnosed with diabetes in pregnancy.
You will be responsible for providing clinical leadership to improve pregnancy outcomes and supporting a positive patient experience.
You will work in partnership with other professionals, pregnant women and their families to encourage involvement in the planning of care and support a family centred approach by providing sensitive and complex information in a compassionate and kind manner.
Main duties of the job
Educate and support women and their families at all stages of their journey with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM), by providing sensitive and complex information in a compassionate and kind manner
Empower patients and encourage self-management to optimise outcomes, explaining the different clinical managements plans in a clear and concise manner
Utilise expert knowledge and experience to make effective autonomous diagnostic and therapeutic decisions for women with GDM
Develop appropriate and individualised management plans for women with GDM, which may include lifestyle advice, initiation of oral therapies or insulin with ongoing dose titration or other complex scenarios
Provide specialist leadership and expert advice in the management of GDM for other healthcare professionals across the healthcare community
Lead on clinical audit, present findings and implement service development/ improvement where necessary
Lead and liaise with relevant community services/ multidisciplinary teams to optimise outcomes for GDM
Design and participate in formal and informal teaching for healthcare, taking account of the complicated care pathways and complex communication required to deliver the training.
Work with professionals within North Bristol Trust and the regional healthcare community
Ensure up-to-date evidence-based management of patients with GDM is promoted
Work in both outpatient and inpatient settings

Undertake role of lead midwife in accordance with National Guidance
Utilise expert knowledge and skills to develop and maintain appropriate care pathways for women with GDM
In conjunction with other professionals, set, review and maintain standards in relation to GDM practice in line with local and national policy
Ensure frameworks are in place to support and develop high quality safe practice in diabetes provision within the Maternity Services
Work autonomously and be responsible for the management of his/ her workload within a variety of healthcare settings
Provide leadership to initiate and maintain effective communication channels with the multidisciplinary team including nursing and medical staff, general practitioners and other external agencies who may be involved in GDM provision
Be responsible to ensure services are consistent and equitable
Provide specialist professional advice, leadership, support and supervision as required regarding GDM to all health care professionals; and in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary / multiagency teams facilitate development of the service within the hospital and community settings
Provide specialist education and training in relation to GDM care to clinical and non-clinical staff across the Trust
Be responsible for the audit of diabetes care practices within the maternity setting; compile and present audit reports and implement service improvement/ development when required in line with national recommendations and in agreement with clinical team
Awareness of the latest national guidelines for diabetes in pregnancy
Understand diagnostic criteria for GDM and recognise potential undiagnosed pre-existing diabetes
In-depth knowledge and understanding of GDM
Respect womens equality, considering diversity and rights and ensuring vulnerable women and families receive equitable care. This includes those subjected to domestic abuse, homelessness and/or language barriers
