Job summary

The NHS provides Genomic testing through a single national testing network, creating a world-class resource for the NHS and underpinning the future Genomic Medicine Service. It also supports the delivery of the Government's Life Sciences Strategy and the broader research and innovation agenda, building upon the NHS contribution to the 100,000 Genomes Project.

The post holder will assist in the provision of Genomic services using informatics, data analysis and the management of departmental IT systems (including StarLIMS) to facilitate smooth running of the department and the Southwest Genomic Laboratory Hub (SWGLH), which is led by North Bristol NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support SWGLH colleagues, by

  • Optimising and maintaining the current departmental IT solution (STAR LIMS),
  • Maintenance and standardisation of the Genomic laboratory LIMS systems, working towards unification of the Exeter and BGL sites
  • Reviewing and scoping interoperability potential
  • Increase the Digital Interoperability between the Genomics LIMS and Pathology LIMS across the southwest.
  • Increasing the interoperability between clinical users and the GLH e.g. electronic requesting and reporting
  • Management of data and cloud infrastructure
  • Creating or tailoring reporting solutions to further develop a dashboard functionality
  • Developing a specification for the procurement of the new IT system to meet the business requirements
  • Advising on issues of data standards and quality as necessary.
  • Tailoring the current LIMS to meet NHSE KPIs and quality improvements.
  • The post holder will also be involved in leading projects or ad hoc queries that address key analytical and information needs of the SWGLH.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will report directly to the Senior Managers within the department and be accountable to the SW GLH informatics lead.

LIMS (StarLIMS) Maintenance and Development

  • To provide day-to-day running, support, configuration and maintenance of the LIMS for all activities relevant to the testing process within the laboratory (including development of internal system software code)
  • To develop and maintain the LIMS
  • To initiate, develop, maintain and support interfaces for external IT systems, databases, and robotics with the LIMS (wherever possible)
  • To develop and maintain workflows within LIMS to support the testing requirements of the SWGLH
  • To develop and maintain working relationships with LIMS staff and the LIMS leads in other genomic laboratory hubs to enable complex troubleshooting and to develop further the system

Internal and External Development and optimisation of current LIMS

  • To actively engage with other members of the informatics team to develop and optimise the LIMS used in the SWGLH, facilitating the efficient and timely extraction of required data
  • Reviewing and scoping current and future interoperability potential.
  • Provision of bespoke reporting solutions including the development of Dashboards across both Bristol and Exeter that illustrate operational performance across the GLH. Designing and implementing new analysis and reporting streams for performance indicators, increasing the availability and accessibility of a range of information to GLH colleagues and to managers and clinicians across GLH Trusts
  • Analyse and report on a range of options in order to contribute to decision making regarding the procurement of a new LIMS
  • Develop a thorough expert understanding of Genetics datasets and performance metrics needed to be embedded into a LIMS specification
  • Highly complex data modelling of the local Genetics service to support the development of LIMS procurement across the GLH. This will involve working with senior clinical colleagues to help quantify resource required to deliver services under various scenarios and supporting the development of the LIMS procurement specification.
  • Develop a thorough expert understanding of Genetics datasets and performance metrics and ensure alignment with the national genomics data specifications
  • Review and benchmark other areas LIMs solutions and compare options for requirements
  • To work with Clinical coding professionals across the GLH to ensure accurate data capture within the LIMS
  • To actively promote a data quality agenda across the GLH to improve the quality of data captured about genetic services to comply with Information governance standards. To play a key part in driving improvement in data quality.

  • Formal training or experience in the use of Structured Query Language (SQL)
