Job summary
Providing genetic healthcare to patients referred to the Northwest Thames Regional Genetics Service. This comprises running clinics for all type of referrals, with a special focus on prenatal referrals (pregnant couples), which are often ad hoc and urgent consultations. For prenatal referrals, the main tasks will be to counsel the parents about the condition in their unborn baby, discuss further genetic testing and organising the latter when parents opt for it. Part of the role is to attend multidisciplinary meetings with Fetal Medicine Consultants of the regional Fetal Medicine Units, which are located in hospitals and NHS Trusts in the region: Queen Charlotte Hospital, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, St Mary's Hospital, Luton and Dunstable Hospital, UCLH, Northwick Park Hospital, Barnet Hospital, Watford General Hospital, and the Lister Hospital. When prenatal genetic testing will occur, regular contact with the local Genomic Laboratory Hubs (located in GOSH and Cambridge) will be needed. The role also involves monitoring that laboratory results are returned in a timely manner, and discussing results with the laboratory, Fetal Medicine Units, and the parents.
In addition to prenatal referrals, the clinical fellow will also run some general genetics clinics, involving referrals for children and adults with a wide range of genetic conditions or a suspicion thereof.
Main duties of the job
Seeing ad hoc referred pregnant couples with a genetic issue in their families or unborn child, including arranging prenatal genetic testing and all the associated logistics; running regular clinics; contributing to MDTs with FMU specialists and laboratory scientists; and being part of the (several times a month) daily departmental on-call rota, dealing with urgent referrals and queries.
