Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow in Anaesthesia (Locally Employed Doctor) of CT1+/equivalent grade to join the Department of Anaesthesia at LNWUHT. Applicants must have a minimum of six months' previous experience in anaesthesia and Initial Assessment of Competency (IAC) or evidence of equivalent training. In addition, previous experience in intensive care or acute medical specialties is desirable.It is expected that the candidate would sit or already be in possession of the primary FRCA examination.
This post provides comprehensive training and development opportunities for a career anaesthetist who wishes to gain further experience in a busy northwest London Trust, through primarily working at both Ealing and Northwick Park Hospitals. It could also provide a route to either applying for a Specialist Training number or following an alternative path, such as the CESR route. The department has an excellent reputation for training and professional development and for supporting trainees taking FRCA exams and applying for training numbers. There is a weekly departmental teaching programme, as well as regular clinical governance and mortality meetings. The anaesthetic department is also in the process of setting up its own CESR programme
Main duties of the job
In addition to anaesthetic provision for elective and emergency cases on both the Ealing and Northwick Park sites, the successful candidate will participate in the out of hours theatre rota atEaling Hospital. The rota is 1:7, working with both locally employed and Imperial trainee doctors and is EWTD and New Deal compliant.
Other out of hours duties include patient assessment for theatres, pain management and being part of the cardiac arrest and trauma teams. Postholders will also gain experience in dealing with critically unwell patients on the wards and the Emergency Department. There is a senior resident tier at night with experienced SAS grade anaesthetists for help and supervision and a non-resident Consultant available for advice and on-site support as required.
Although out of hours the role will be based at Ealing Hospital, at other times the postholder will also work on the Northwick Park site and have exposure to anaesthesia for both elective and emergency cases across a wide range of surgical specialties includinggeneral surgery, colorectal, upper GI, gynae, orthopaedic/trauma, head and neck/oromaxillofacial, vascular, breast and urology. There is also a busy obstetric unit at Northwick Park which can provide the opportunity for training if required, eg for CT3 training.

The post holder will be expected to participate fully in the provision of a comprehensive anaesthetic service to the Trust and be accountable to the Clinical Director. Duties will include to:
Provide anaesthesia and analgesia for patients undergoing elective and emergency surgery, under the supervision of a more senior anaesthetist (Registrar/Consultant)
- Undertake pre-operative assessments and provide post-operative care in the recovery room
- Participate in the delivery of the acute pain service
- Communicate with their supervising Middle Grade or Consultant Anaesthetist for advice and support as required.
- Provide resuscitation and trauma care with support of more senior anaesthetist
- Familiarise him/ herself with their role in the Trusts Major Incident policy and departmental policies
- When required, provide support to the intensive care team, either on ICU, in the Emergency Department or the wards, with appropriate supervision. If appropriate, they may also be required to transfer patients to another hospital.
- Perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant in consultation where applicable with his/her colleagues both senior and junior
- Attend teaching sessions and departmental meetings including Clinical Governance
- Follow the General Medical Council Good Medical Practice guidance with respect to all duties (www.gmc-uk.org)
