Job summary
Ealing Hospital has close academic and service links with Imperial College School of Medicine and Hammersmith Hospitals Trust. These include Specialist Registrar rotations in medicine, surgery and anaesthetics, which are coordinated through the North Thames Deanery. Many consultants have joint appointments or academic sessions at Imperial College.
Ealing Hospital is an Associated University Hospital of the University of London and has students from Imperial College School of Medicine on attachments in medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, anaesthetics, A&E and other departments. The value of medical training is well recognised and consultants devote appreciable time and effort to teaching junior staff and medical students.
There is an active postgraduate education department with many weekly meetings in the various specialties and a general weekly lunchtime Grand Round for medical staff from all departments. The postgraduate centre has undergone extensive improvements in recent years with a large lecture theatre, several well appointed seminar rooms and a very well equipped library and literature search facility. The Postgraduate Library is a multi-disciplinary facility providing state of the art information access on all medical issues, computer facilities with Internet access, and a clinical video library.
Main duties of the job
The post will be based in the Department of General Medicine at Ealing Hospital NHS Trust. The aim of the post is two fold to facilitate the teaching of medical students and to provide the medical doctor in training with a year of instruction into medical science.
The post holder will become an integral part of the General Medical team. The post holder will have share of an office from which to work, with computing facilities and connection to the Internet.
The post holder will be responsible for organising and co-ordinating the daily teaching of medical students from Imperial Medical College. These sessions should include patient assessment, medical disease, treatment options and related medical topics. He/she will be expected to run teaching clinics by recruiting patients from the waiting list or outpatient clinics. These teaching sessions will take up to 12 hours of time per week including preparation time and will run in parallel with existing teaching from medical staff at the Hospital.
The post holder will co-ordinate the end of attachment assessment including preparing a small written examination for the students. He/she will also organise the clinical for the final MBBS examination in June.

The appointee will be directly responsible to the Director of Clinical Studies for Undergraduate education. He/she will be expected to work closely with the Medical Education Manager at the Undergraduate Centre at the Hospital.
The post holder will be registered at Imperial Medical School for the MSC Medical Science course. The aim of the course is to provide the medical doctor in training, with a year of instruction into medical science and into clinical development in his/her area of specialisation within medicine. By the end of the 3 months stem programme the students should have enhanced his/her understanding of molecular biology, medical immunology and infectious disease and have developed skills in presentation, computing and statistics, through completion of a thesis the student should gain experience in research methodology and techniques, design of a research project, data analysis and presentation, literature searching and presentation of work for publication. In addition he/she will have studies in depth a practical aspect of general medicine.
It is anticipated that the successful candidate will be able to develop his/her research on the Ealing Hospital site with the support of the Institute of Medical Research. The area of research can be the candidates own idea or be chosen from projects proposed by the staff at Ealing Hospital or Imperial. A member of the academic staff from Imperial Medical School and Ealing will jointly supervise the students.
