Post Title:Student Ambulance Technician (FREC Development Pathway)

East Midlands Ambulance NHS Trust (EMAS) are pleased to advertise theStudent Technician Pathway (FREC Pathway)to encourage motivated and committed people into our service. EMAS recognise that not allpeople who seek a career in the ambulance service may have all of the academic qualifications to gain immediate admission onto a Technician programme. EMAS have worked to create a dedicated Student Technician pathway that will enable individuals to commence employment whilst working towards strengthening both English/Maths qualifications as well as achieving a regulated clinical qualification.

Main duties of the job

The Student Ambulance Technician (FREC Pathway) is unique in its design. During development you will complete:

  • The First Response Emergency Care Qualifications at Levels 3, 4 and 5 (Qualsafe Awards)
  • EMAS specific development
  • English & maths development within the pathway
  • Circa 14 weeks operational development at a support level grade before qualifying (equivalent to Emergency Care Assistant)
  • Emergency Driving competencies
  • Circa 20 weeks experiential learning as a Student Technician.

The duration of the pathway isa minimum of 61 weeksbefore being eligible for qualified Technician status (subject to all assessments being passed). The post is therefore subject to a probation period for the duration of development (61 weeks).

Upon qualifying as a Technician, you will undertake a 12-month period of consolidation in line with the Trust's Newly Qualified Technician (NQT) Policy.

About us

NQTs who have completed all components of the NQT consolidation of practice portfolio and deemed capable in Technician practice will progress to experienced/independent clinician status. At this point, the Technician may work with any grade of staff and will be expected to work independently and act as a clinical lead in the absence of a Paramedic/Registrant and will receive remuneration in line with Agenda for Change Band 5 pay scales.

Firstly, you must be committed to providing excellent emergency and urgent care for patients of the East Midlands. You must also commit to upholding our Trust values of respect, integrity, compassion, teamwork and contribution. You will have experience in work roles that are people facing and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You will be able to demonstrate a commitment to personal development and have a realistic understanding of the ambulance service.

You must be occupationally fit to undertake the role of a Student Technician. You must hold a full UK manual driving licence with no more than 3 penalty points for excess speed andmust haveat least a provisional C1 categoryat point of application.

Additionally, you must hold the following:

Essential:

  • Three GCSEs at Grade 3 (current grading) or above (previous grading of Grade D or above)
  • Evidence of applied numeracy and literacy skills in everyday situations
  • C1 driving entitlement (provisional C1 will be accepted at point of application)

The Student Technician Pathway (Widening Participation) will require you to engage in a range of learning, including but not limited to taught and assessed sessions, self-directed learning, online learning, portfolio development and experiential learning in practice.
