Job summary

Responsible for the day-to-day management, supervision and coordination of Grounds & Gardens staff members, providing leadership through effective planning and delegation; ensuring that staff are working effectively and that the service is delivered in accordance with organisational requirements. Provide high quality support to the Grounds & Gardens Officer, playing a key role in identifying and implementing service improvements.

To provide a grounds and gardens maintenance service to the Bethlem Royal Hospital and Croydon and Lewisham Community properties. To contribute effectively as part of a team to provide a high-quality service.

Main duties of the job

Working closely as a team and with other Facilities Team Leaders, liaise and support each other, keeping up to date on all aspects of the Facilities service.

Manage staff under your responsibility and ensure they receive appropriate training and development; ensure regular supervision is provided, managing absence and performance and dealing with staffing issues as they arise.

Always manage and ensure the professionalism of staff both in the wearing of uniform and in their interactions with staff, patients, visitors and contractors.

Manage the team workload, planning and coordinating workload to ensure effective use of resources; monitor team activities to ensure the service is efficient and well run, delegate tasks to include as appropriate to site all Ground and Gardens duties.

Develop an in-depth understanding of the E-Roster system and manage it efficiently with attention to detail to ensure that individual records are accurate and always up to date and that deadlines for payroll etc are met and any issues and discrepancies highlighted and dealt with appropriately and on time.

Ensure that all incidents and accidents are recorded and reported accurately and comprehensively in line with the organisations Health and Safety requirements (eg Datix) and escalated as appropriate.

Ensure that the areas occupied by the Facilities team are regularly inspected for Health and Safety, to include a fire risk assessment and that an appropriate number of fire wardens and first aiders are trained.

Liaise with the Fire Officers, Estates and Facilities staff and H&S Advisor in relation to Fire Risk Assessments and Fire Safety Audits, monitoring and following up actions as required. Ensure fire log for the building is maintained and kept up to date as required and evacuations are completed and details recorded.

To undertake regular grounds maintenance eg grass cutting, border maintenance, hedge cutting and seasonal pruning etc.

To contribute to the continual improvement of gardens and grounds on the Bethlem and Community sites.

To contribute to safe and secure pathways and to carry out maintenance as required on the Bethlem and Community sites.

To develop ward garden areas for the benefit of our residents.

To take part in the maintenance and upkeep of plant containers and water bedding plants as required.

Control of garden machinery in a safe manner and report any faults to the Grounds & Gardens Officer.

Work in a safe manner that does not endanger other persons on site, wearing appropriate PPE as required to complete tasks safely.

To be compliant in trust polices and mandatory training.

Participate as required in policy review providing input and comment as required.

Acknowledge and comply with all the current Health & Safety guidelines in line with Trust policies.

  • oFull UK manual driving licence

Desirable

  • Chemical spraying to a standard of PA-06 certificate (Hand held applications
  • Chain saw certificate
  • MWEP Certificate

Experience

  • experienced professional gardener
  • Experience of security measures for equipment
  • Must be able to lift heavy items and have knowledge of the correct manner of lifting, bending, kneeling etc.... as heavy digging is required
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions

  • Basic Knowledge of tractor and ride on mowers
