Senior Acute Inpatient Mental Health Occupational Therapist

Job summary

We are looking for a dynamic and client centred Occupational Therapist to join our one of our female working age adult inpatient mental health acute wards. Based at the Maudsley Hospital, Denmark Hill, London, this post has good transport links making commuting viable within London and surrounding areas.

The successful candidate will be based on Ruskin ward and will join an experienced and supportive team of Occupational Therapists working within South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust Southwark directorate inpatient services and the wider community.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be a dynamic, creative, forward thinking and hard-working occupational therapist with solid mental health experience. They will be able to carry out occupationally focused assessments and interventions and will be integrated into the MDT to promote a collaborative approach to the use of therapeutic activity.

The post holder will oversee and provide occupational therapy individual and group assessment, intervention and evaluation to women accessing acute inpatient care, promoting safety, recovery and person centred practice

  • To be an integrated team member within the ward team, and Southwark OT team to address occupational and recovery goals for patients.
  • To undertake occupational therapy assessments for a designated caseload, assessing health and well-being from an occupational perspective.
  • In collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team and service users, to plan and implement individual or group therapeutic interventions using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals which support recovery.
  • To utilise outcome measures that give clear evidence that occupational therapy has supported individual recovery and social inclusion.
  • To apply a high level of understanding of the effect of disability and provide training and advice on lifestyle changes and adaptations to the service users social and physical environment. Where applicable, to assess and prescribe small aids and equipment and recommend adaptations to maximise independence for service users in home and community environments.
  • Being active in discharge planning, providing occupationally focussed recommendations and working closely with discharge coordinators, care coordinators, wider involved agencies and families/carers to ensure transition into community is done in the most effective and person centred way.
