Job description

Job responsibilities

At South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, we believe in providing excellent care which is delivered with pride and compassion. Everything we do is to improve the lives of the people and communities we serve and to promote mental health and wellbeing for all.

The South London & Maudsley (SLaM) Clinical Informatics Service (CIS) has been set up to provide informatics capability to support clinical decision making in direct care. Our aim is to enable SLaM staff to use clinical data to inform their decision making at individual patient and service levels to improve the quality and equity of the care delivered. Our work will be directed by the questions identified as important by clinicians and our tools developed iteratively with the teams who will be using them in their routine practice, translating the unique data resources and clinical informatics research and expertise within the Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) to build a learning health system that solves practical problems within the trust.

The CIS is responsible for the development and maintenance of the platform LUCI (locating useful clinical information), a data platform that uses new analytics techniques to extract value from data and summarise it back to clinicians to support direct clinical care and service design and delivery. LUCI uses interactive visualisation to feedback data to clinicians in ways that maximise their ability to quickly extract relevant insights and interact with the data.

The CIS is currently funded on a fixed-term grant to develop a fully-operational service in the trust. There has been to date some initial design and development work to create a user-friendly platform which is currently being rolled out in specific community teams.

The postholder will be seconded into the Clinical Informatics Service and will support our ongoing process of implementation and iteration of the platform to ensure it is adapted for clinical needs and workflows. They will take the lead in working alongside teams to help them to understand how LUCI could augment their current work and also support new ways of working, design, co-ordinate and deliver training, leading programmes such as train the trainer to ensure sustainability. They will provide input, using their clinical expertise, into the development of new platforms and ensure that the clinical end-user is held in mind throughout the design process. They will work in partnership with senior clinical colleagues to evaluate current clinical workflows and understand the opportunities for new ways of working that account for new data tools. They will also act as an advocate for clinical informatics and be vital to any work around education of clinicians about data.

The post-holder does not need to be conversant with coding languages, and a good understanding of clinical data and clinical workflows is a much more important attribute as they will be working alongside developers. There will be a full induction to ensure that the post-holder has a good understanding of the technical capabilities of LUCI and the clinical processes that it was designed to support.. The post will be supervised by the clinical leads of the service and will be supported by a team including informaticians, developers, academics and clinicians.
