Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist - Chelsham House Bethlem Royal Hospital
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated consultant to join Chelsham house team at the Bethlem Royal Hospital for 5 months. This is a well-established substantive consultant post which has been recruited to but successful applicant cannot start till October.
Chelsham House [predominantly for patients with dementia] is an 18 bedded ward located on the beautiful grounds of the Bethlem Royal Hospital, Monks Orchard Road, Beckenham, Greater London, BR3 3BX and the employing Trust is South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLAM). It provides care and treatment to older adults from any of the four boroughs [Croydon, Lewisham, Lambeth, and Southwark] with dementia who need in-patient assessment and treatment.
The hours of work for the post holder will be Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
There are close working relationships with the other teams within the directorate, including the other two inpatient wards, two home treatment teams, four liaison teams and four community mental health teams.
The post is supported by resident doctors, .
The post holder will work in a well-established multidisciplinary team with resident doctor support, both core and specialty. There is dedicated office space, laptop and screen as well as admin support.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide senior medical leadership to the ward. They will be the Responsible clinician for all patients detained under the mental health act as well as responsible consultant for the rest of the patients who are not detained.
The post-holder will be expected to provide supervision to the other medical members of the team in line with Royal College of Psychiatrists requirements and the Trust's Supervision policy. They will support the ward manager in evaluating the performance of the team and be part of quality improvement work going on in the team.
The post holder will participate in the MHOA consultant on-call rota, providing consultant advice/ support to on-call resident doctors when they see older adult patients. The rota is approximately 1 in 22. The post holder will be expected to be part of reciprocal consultant cover arrangements with the other in-patient consultants.

Essential
- Fully registered with GMC with a licence to practice
- Eligibility for inclusion on the specialist register
- Approved Clinician status
- Approval under Section 12(2) MHA 1983
Desirable
- Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
- Relevant higher degree e.g. MSc, PhD, MD
- Evidence of specific CCT and relevant endorsement

- Confidence in risk formulation and management on an acute older adult ward
