Job summary

The post holder will provide medical input supervised by consultant psychiatrist as part of a multi-disciplinary team offering care for people who present with early Psychosis.

Main duties of the job

  • psychiatric assessment, treatment, planning and review of service users;
  • be a member of the multi-disciplinary team and to participate in the delivery and evaluation of treatment for the service users;
  • participate in MDT meetings and Care Programme Approach reviews;
  • conduct in depth informed clinical interviews, to be able to do mental state assessments, and general physical examination and request relevant investigations such as ECG, Bloods and formulate appropriate treatment plans including referrals to general medical services;
  • Ensure that routine physical health checks are performed accordingly to the Early Intervention Standards.
  • provide medical and mental health assessments to service users, and identify treatment resistant patients
  • liaise with appropriate agencies concerning the treatment and management of service users, including maintaining active correspondence with GPs;
  • diagnose clients with an ICD-10 code on acceptance onto the caseload and follow up appointments;
  • maintain adequate written documentation of all medical and psychiatric examinations of the patients and to record contacts with relatives and carers. .
  • undertake and complete psychiatric reports under supervision for Mental Health Tribunals and Hospital Managers hearings and attending them as needed.

About us

The STEP Team is part of the Southwark Directorate within the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. STEP is the Early Intervention in Psychosis Service for Southwark and uses an assertive outreach model, and receives referrals for the whole of the Borough. The service is an innovative multidisciplinary community team, serving clients from a variety of cultural backgrounds in Southwark who experience their first episode of psychosis and often have challenging and complex needs, including difficulties with engagement.

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council with a licence to practice

Desirable

  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
  • Approved under S12 of the UK Mental Health Act (1983), or able to achieve these within 3 months of appointment (A)

Experience and clinical skills

  • Commitment and experience of multi-professional team working (I)
  • Confidence in managing acute risk situations including use of MHA as appropriate.
