Job summary

The Acute Referral Centre (ARC) operates 24hrs a day, 7 days a week. It is the Trusts central point of contact for crisis referrals. All referrals are triaged in ARC to ensure robust gatekeeping. This in addition to key functions being undertaken within the centre including the overall booking process of acute beds, the Health Based Place of Safety (HBPoS) and the 24hr Adult Crisis Line.

ARC works closely with the borough-based Home Treatment Teams (HTT), Assessment and Liaison services, Community Treatment Teams, acute trusts, Crisis Assessment Team (CAT), London Ambulance Service (LAS) and the Police. The centre provides telephone advice and support for people in crisis whist co-ordinating both admissions to and discharges from hospital.

The post holder must be able to work day and night shifts.

-Early shifts (08:00-16:00)

-Late shifts (14:00-22:00)

-Long days (08:00-22:00)

-Night shifts (21:45-08:15)

Main duties of the job

ARC Practitioners are experienced mental health professionals (Nurse, OT or Social Workers) who will undertake triage assessments and when required face to face rapid assessments alongside London Ambulance and the Metropolitan Police. They can balance the clinical demands and supervisory responsibilities within the Acute Referral Centre. They form part of a team that manages beds and are expected to follow through referrals to a safe conclusion which means liaising with wards, community services and HTT. They are active members of the bed management coordination function for the Trust and as such get involved with the entire booking process for in-patient admissions.

The post holder will be able to demonstrate critical thinking in the clinical decision-making process. They will work with the multi-professional team to meet the needs of the service users and provide clinical professional supervision and leadership to the clinical team working within the referral centre.

The post holder will be a Registered Mental Health Professional (Nurse, OT or Social Worker) with an established clinical background who has successfully completed a period of academic education and clinical supervision. The post holder may be required to work across different Trust sites according to the needs of the service.
