Job summary

Lewisham NHS Talking Therapies (formerly IAPT) is a dynamic and innovative, primary care psychological therapies service; one of four Talking Therapies services delivered by South London and Maudsley (SL&M) NHS Foundation Trust.

The service is looking to recruit an experienced psychological therapist who will provide senior expertise on equality and diversity matters and support the senior team with the implementation of the 'Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Service User Positive Practice Guide'; from a strategic and operational perspective.

Main duties of the job

Lewisham Borough is an area of high social and psychological needs with considerable cultural diversity. The service provides psychological care to an ethnically diverse group of patients and the Trust is working to be an anti-racist organisation. Many patients present with multiple problems including social, housing and employment issues, and a wide range of common mental health issues of varying degrees of severity. The successful candidate will take a lead in ensuring the service's ability to deliver accessible and acceptable psychological therapies to our diverse local communities in Lewisham.

About us

The service links with the IAPT training courses at King's College/ Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN); University College London and The University of Exeter. We also work with centres of clinical excellence and research innovation such as the Centre for Anxiety Disorders and Trauma (CADAT).

Our motivated staff have engaged with specialised training thus allowing us to offer CBT, CfD, EMDR, DIT, IPT and BCT. Considerable partnership work already exists with our community and we are pleased to hear from applicants who have areas of special interests or skills in leading on this work.

Job responsibilities

  • To take a lead in ensuring the services ability to deliver accessible and acceptable psychological therapies to diverse local communities in Lewisham.
  • To promote strategies and protocols across the service to decrease racial inequalities, increase access and improve experience and outcomes for psychological therapy for ethnically and culturally diverse members of the Lewisham community.
  • To contribute to workforce planning for the service, including staff engagement, recruitment, professional appraisal and staff continuing professional development activities, promoting the active recruitment and development of staff from diverse backgrounds for the staff team to reflect the local communities.
  • To support the management team to be proactive in challenging discrimination and support the development of culturally competent services.
  • To support the clinical leads in the maintenance of a strong, committed and motivated team and sharing responsibility for the day to day running of the service
  • To work collaboratively with the clinical leads to implement service developments / new initiatives in line with the Service Diversity & Inclusion Strategy and Service Objectives.
  • To model NHS talking Therapies protocols and ways of working in direct clinical workwith NHS TT staff and also in collaboration with allied teams. To provide high quality specialist supervision and training relevant to culturally sensitive therapy models.
  • To carry out general line management tasks and focus upon supporting staff to meet performance targets.
  • To carry out highly specialist assessments and brief evidence-based psychological therapy, using at least one NICE recommended treatment for anxiety and depression

  • Clinical Psychologist or Counselling Psychologist or High Intensity CBT therapist (BABCP full accreditation) or High Intensity Counsellor, (UKCP or BACP fully accredited) with qualification in an NHS Talking therapies treatment protocol eg IPT, CfD or Post-graduate qualification in low intensity interventions (IAPT) - accredited by BABCP or BPS - PWP Lead- with PWP accreditation
