Deputy Director of Pharmacy 8D

This new post has been created to lead, manage and support all pharmacy services at SLaM. The postholder will develop and direct pharmacy strategy, service developments and user engagement. Supported by a team of very experienced staff, the postholder will oversee clinical and operational teams and ensure our services meet the Trust's changing requirements.

Main duties of the job

As deputy to Professor David Taylor, the postholder will take responsibility forfinance, personnel management, strategy and operations. The postholder will also play a key role within the trust's senior management team and be the primary liaison with our local ICB.

We are looking for someone who has experience of working at a senior level in mental health pharmacy who is enthusiastic about taking on the responsibility of day-to-day management of a large department and of developing a strategy to guide the department's future. The postholder will be a knowledgeable, decisive and charismatic leader.

About us

SLaM pharmacy is one of the world's leading mental health pharmacy departments, employing over 100 members of staff, including several highly cited researchers in the field of clinical psychopharmacology. The department offers a comprehensive clinical service (including Medicines Advice and Clinical Trials) and has pioneered the use of point-of-care capillary neutrophil count monitoring and capillary monitoring of clozapine blood levels. Participation in research is strongly encouraged and supported by a part-time PhD programme which has enabled five current members of staff to obtain a PhD.

The Trust has four pharmacy departments and provide services to inpatient, community and outpatients. We have over 1000 beds and serve a population of 1.4m in five London boroughs.

The Trust is renowned for research in mental health and its links to the IOPPN. Our staff are able to develop their specialist skills in a range of disciplines.

The Deputy Director of Pharmacy leads on professional and strategic service delivery and advice to the Director of Pharmacy and Pathology and the Trust on clinical pharmacy, operational delivery of services and drug expenditure. The post holder also supports and deputises for the Director of Pharmacy in the management of the pharmacy services. The post holder will have delegated authority to act in the absence of the Director of Pharmacy and Pathology.

The post holder is responsible for day-to-day management of the pharmacy service, delivered by approximately 100 staff. Of these, the majority are graduates and many hold further postgraduate specialist qualifications, and several have doctorates. The post holder has devolved management accountability for budget in excess of £14 million.

The post holder is expected to help manage the £11million of medicines expenditure per annum. This is through influencing and controlling the use of medicines to ensure clinical and cost effectiveness.

Essential

  • MPharm (Masters degree) or equivalent Bachelor's degree
  • Registered Pharmacist - registration with General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Mandatory CPD to maintain fitness to practice.
  • Specialist higher degree (Masters) in Clinical Pharmacy or management or a related area or a portfolio demonstrating equivalent through experience at senior management level and relevant short courses taught at postgraduate level.

Desirable

  • Faculty Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
  • Member of the College of Mental Health Pharmacists (CMHP)

Experience

Essential

  • Substantial relevant post registration experience in a hospital
  • Experience of operating at consultant level on multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience of working with senior healthcare professionals outside of Pharmacy to achieve across Trust developments.
  • Recent practice in a leadership role within pharmacy
  • Experience of managing a large number of staff.

Knowledge / Skills

Essential

  • Knowledge of all regulations and legislation relevant to clinical pharmacy.
  • Knowledge of the requirements of national organisations involved in clinical pharmacy e.g. DoH, UKCPA.
  • Knowledge of financial reporting and budget statements
  • Be able to provide highly complex information on both clinical pharmacy and financial issues and impart knowledge to all levels of healthcare professionals (up to and including senior consultants/professor/executive director level)
  • Be able to analyse highly complex information relating to clinical pharmacy issues and medicines and their use.

  • Be flexible in responding to demands of the service.
  • Be able to concentrate on highly complex matters (drug use evaluations, drug query answering, clinical prescription review, checking of dispensed prescriptions) despite frequent interruptions.
