This post is for a substantive, full-time Consultant Psychiatrist to lead a new ward at the Maudsley Hospital - Lucas Ward
Awaiting Royal College Approval
Lucas Ward is going to open as a new 11 bed acute female inpatient unit based within the Maudsley Hospital in Southwark which already hosts several other services (see below), and is the centre of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.
The ward is being opened as a part of the trust's strategy to increase bed capacity to meet our daily demand.
The ward is an exciting project for SLAM, with high resources committed to its success. The Consultant Psychiatrist will be in an ideal position to lead and develop this new service.
Lucas Ward will provide psychiatric care for women, aged 18-65, with acute mental health problems.
Main duties of the job
Clinical duties of post holder
The main duties of the post holder are to provide psychiatry consultant leadership, to act as Approved Clinician for the ward's case load, and to work with the ward manager to deliver high quality care for patients under the care of the unit.

Main duties:
- To provide enthusiastic, and flexible, joint clinical leadership and consultant input into the team, alongside the ward manager
- To take consultant responsibility for your ward, acting as Approved Clinician and assessing or supervising assessment and management of patients and devising or helping to devise appropriate treatment plans and medication regimes, providing prompt medical response, and advising and work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team
- To provide consultant input into the ward, using your expertise to provide advice, liaising closely with others, and providing assessment of complex presentations and creating appropriate management plans
- To offer expert risk assessment and management skills in complex care of people with severe mental illness or those admitted in crisis.
- To ensure excellence in the delivery of evidence-based treatments
- To act as a source of support, advice, and information to current or prospective patients and their carers, referrers, team members and other professionals
- To attend Directorate bed management/ Right Care meetings and work closely with AMD and Southwark flow team in identifying barriers to discharge and ensuring early discharge planning for each new admission to the ward.
- In conjunction with the ward manager, the Consultant Psychiatrist will help to represent the ward at directorate and care pathway meetings and other internal and external meetings where needed.
- To provide reciprocal Approved Clinician cover including under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act for the leave, study leave and sickness of senior medical staff in Southwark during working hours, along with other borough consultants
- To keep up to date with all developments in research and treatment around acute care pathways and inpatient mental health care
- To develop strong working relationships with outside stakeholders, notably GPs, local authority social services, housing providers and local voluntary organisations.
- To undertake responsibilities as an Approved Clinician under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act 1983 as needed
- To work flexibly with other teams within SLAM and other mental trusts, and with the voluntary sector, to ensure good coordination of care
- To provide support and clinical supervision to junior doctors on the ward and float doctors assisting the ward
- The post holder will actively contribute to, and implement, the strategic aims of the Trusts Board and SLAM mental health services, with the aim to improve of the quality of care within the service and contribute to improving quality across the system.
- The post holder will help promote the financial success of the service including ensuring adequate numbers of funded referrals and running the service within budget. The post holder will take an active role in business planning with senior managers
- The post holder will shape, support, and develop a culture, which develops and improves mental healthcare for patients with complex care needs, and promotes independence
- The post holder will be expected to keep themselves informed (and to inform) regarding developments in Southwark commissioning, as well as NHS strategy e.g., NHS Long Term Plan and to attend London-wide and National general adult psychiatry meetings as appropriate.
On-call and cover arrangements
The post holder will be involved on the Southwark on call rota; on a B 1% banding supplement, but this could be subject to change. The Trust medical on call rotas is currently under review. There is currently a rota for consultant psychiatrists in Southwark, approximately 1 in 13 for out of hours work.

The medical provision for the ward consists of the following:
1 WTE Consultant Psychiatrist (this post)
1 WTE Specialty doctor working around a higher trainee level
2 WTE non-training grade junior doctors working around a core trainee level
You will work alongside 9 to 10 other consultant psychiatrists who also work on the other wards and PICU at the Maudsley Hospital so there is scope for support and cross cover. There is also the benefit of having other consultants with whom you can discuss challenging cases. The co-location of teams will allow the post holder to work alongside several other psychiatrists with the benefits of cross cover this will allow.
The post holder will be expected to provide clinical cover for other Southwark borough consultants and vice versa.
