Job summary
The National Psychosis Unit (NPU) is the foremost treatment service for people with complex and difficult-to-treat psychotic disorders in England. Drawing on expertise from leading psychosis researchers at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neuroscience (IoPPN, King's College London), the NPU offers intensive multidisciplinary care for people with severe mental illness, often with significant physical health comorbidities as well.
As a Band 5 Registered Mental Health Nurse you will have the opportunity to provide excellent nursing care in a highly specialised environment and to develop your skills in caring for people with psychosis through your hands-on clinical experience and have access to experts for on-the-job learning.
Main duties of the job
The National Psychosis Unit is a specialist mixed- gender 18 bedded inpatient service for working age adults, based at the Bethlem Royal Hospital.
We provide 24 hour care and treatment to people with severe and enduring mental ill health and specialise in treatment resistant / treatment intolerant psychosis.Applying the latest research evidence, our team support people in their treatment and recovery from psychosis. We help people to achieve improved mental and physical health outcomes, greater autonomy, and increased independence, as well as reducing re-admission to hospital . The majority of patients step down from our service to inpatient rehab or supported living placements. Length of stay is between 9-12 months, on average.
Our multidisciplinary team include professionals from a range of health, social care, and allied health professions with partnership working and strong academic connections with the IoPPN. The NPU offers a specialist service that is research-driven and contributes widely to the academic research base. The service strives to uphold the Trust Core Values every day and encourages service users to collaborate in supporting physical and mental wellbeing, and social inclusion for individuals with psychosis.The National Psychosis Unit works closely with families and carers using a behavioural family therapy approach, supporting resilience and facilitating the building and strengthening of positive relationships.

As a staff nurse you will be an integral and valued part of the large multi-disciplinary team.
