We are seeking a Specialist Grade Doctor for Frays Ward, Acute Service at Riverside Centre at Hillingdon Hospital who is looking to increase their experience in psychiatry.

The post holder will be expected to provide in-patient care for all patients admitted to the Frays Ward under the supervision of the Consultant Psychiatrist.

In addition, the post holder will be expected to undertake assessments, in conjunction with nursing or other members of the multi-disciplinary team, of those referred to the service. This will include providing support and advice to referring services should admission not be required.

The person should be a good communicator and works well in a team. They should have some experience and knowledge of physical health conditions.

Main duties of the job

Frays Ward is part of the Acute Service Line at Riverside Centre, on the Hillingdon Hospital site, which consists of the following:o Frays Ward - 18 beds Acute Ward - maleo Crane Ward -18 beds Acute Ward - femaleo Colne Ward - 8 beds PICU - maleAcute wards provide service to patients aged 18 and over who are residents of the London Boroughs of Hillingdon, whilst the Colne Ward is a Trust-wide provision. A proportion of patients come from other boroughs under the CNWL services, if no available beds were available at the time of admission. The nursing and medical teams are complemented by a range of therapy staff such as: Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Sports instructor and Peer Support Worker.

Job responsibilities

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To provide senior clinical decision-making oversight of patients on Frays ward, ensuring that decisions fully incorporate the risk assessments and clinical presentations of patients. This will include providing support and advice on alternative services should admission to Frays ward not be required

Detailed clerking, history taking and initiation of all necessary investigations and assessments for patients, including physical health

Establishing, initiating and evaluating treatment plans and risk assessments in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team and under the supervision of the Consultant Psychiatrist.

Interviewing relatives and informal carers of patients as required.

Undertaking the relevant referrals to other disciplines and services both within the multi-disciplinary team as well as to services and resources external to the service.

Observation of Trust and local policies and procedures; including those related to medicines management and physical healthcare.

Preparation and presentation of medico-legal reports, including those for Managers hearings and Medical Health Review Tribunals for in-patients.

The post holder will complete full risk assessments of all in-patients in conjunction with the MDT.

The post-holder will liaise with all external agencies as required.

The post-holder is expected to be part of the 2nd on-call rota (1 in 10) with attendance to the wards at weekends.

Day to day clinical supervision of the junior doctor. Separate supervision requirements will be arranged by the covering consultant OR supervision will be discussed and overseen by the covering consultant

GENERAL DUTIES

To review and advise on treatment plans and risk assessments as required for Frays ward patients, in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.

To initiate and facilitate meetings with professionals and families as appropriate.

To arrange safe transfers for each patient, in a timely manner.

To facilitate relevant referrals to mental health teams and other external services.

To participate in MHA assessments

To adhere to Trust local policies and procedures, including policies and procedures related to the management of medication and physical healthcare.

To prepare medico-legal reports should they be required for Frays ward patients and to support presentations to Managers hearings and Medical Health Review Tribunals

To complete full risk assessments for each patient in conjunction with the MDT on Frays ward

To chair and supervise ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings

To support training of other team members, nursing colleagues, medical and nursing students.

To maintain accurate records of whiteboard meeting, ward rounds and any other reviews relevant to this role.

To participate in continuing professional development

To participate in annual appraisal in line with the Trust policy.

  • Full GMC registration
  • GMC Licence to Practice
  • To be section 12(2) MHA 1983 approved (or achieve within 6 months of apt), if not have Approved Clinician (AC) status/approval and be on the AC Register.
  • A minimum of six years should have been in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades.
  • Equivalent years' experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas.
