Job summary

The Surrey Sexual Health, HIV and Outreach service is looking for an enthusiastic person who has experience and knowledge of working in the community, engaging with the public to promote the use of PrEP. The successful candidate will join the busy and growing service working 22.5 hours a week, on a 12-month fixed-term contract.

Main duties of the job

Surrey Sexual Health & HIV Services provide a range of sexual health services to the Surrey population including PrEP. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is the use of antiretroviral (ART) medication by HIV-negative people to reduce their risk of acquiring HIV.

This post will operate with Surrey Sexual Health & HIV and Surrey Outreach Services to increase access to and uptake of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

The post holder will develop initiatives to increase access to those at high risk of acquiring HIV and who are not currently in contact with sexual health services. This will be achieved through partnership with Public Health commissioners, the voluntary and community sector and through analysis of national and local data.

The post holder will work in partnership with key stakeholders to identify priority groups, raise awareness of PrEP and establish easy access pathways to Surrey sexual health services.

Support the 2030 goal of eliminating new HIV transmissions in England within the next decade.

The post holder will be required to work as an accountable practitioner working on their own in community settings, making decisions in accordance with policy and protocol.

The Surrey Sexual Health & HIV service consists of friendly teams working across Surrey with sites in Woking, Guildford, Earnsdale, several Young People Spoke clinics and an Outreach Team. We work together to provide excellent sexual health & HIV services to our patients and offer a supportive and flexible environment for team members.

The teams are supported in their professional development with regular training and clinical supervision and opportunities to expand their clinical skills.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holder will:

1. Identify priority groups (those at risk of acquiring HIV) through joint working with Public Health commissioners, the voluntary and community sector and through analysis of national and local data

2. Liaise and maintain contact with providers across Surrey who are in contact with priority groups and communities

3. Network with other agencies including attendance at the Sexual Health Outreach Group (SHOG) to promote and give updates on PrEP

4. Work towards addressing an emerging health inequity around PrEP and HIV by promoting uptake among communities who are at increased risk of HIV and currently less engaged with PrEP

5. Work with and within the Surrey Health Promotion team to signpost priority groups not currently accessing sexual health services and PrEP, particularly those from black and minoritised ethnic groups who have been identified as a high-risk group

6. Work with the Surrey Sexual Health & HIV service to increase access to and uptake of PrEP with priority groups by increasing awareness of the benefits of PrEP and how to access it

7. Offer training and support to community groups to increase knowledge, promote PrEP and help overcome barriers for those at risk of HIV. Explore training champions within the community to promote PrEP

8. Build robust relationships with the community and other partners to support the Health Promotion team to continue the work after the end of the fixed term contract

9. Develop and maintain a relationship with the CNWL PrEP Programme Manager to share good practice/learning

10. Support media campaigns with the Trusts Communications Team and the Surrey Health Promotion Team

11. Fully utilise CNWLs digital technology and social media to reach out to priority groups and engage with diverse communities

12. Record and report on activity including Patient surveys and feedback

13. Provide updates on PrEP to Surrey Sexual Health & HIV staff at Local Education Meetings (LEM)

14. Support and teach new members of staff about PrEP and how best to promote it to patients

15. Work as part of a team, attend team meetings and supervision sessions

16. Be required to work regular hours with flexibility to work occasional evening and weekends (to cover specific events).
