Highly Specialised Dietitian - Eating Disorders

Job summary

The post-holder will be an expert practitioner and provide dietary advice, guidance and education to both patients and clinicians in the Adult Eating Disorder Service.

This will include leading on service development for dietetic provision across the inpatient, day patient and outpatient services.

They will work as a key member of multi-disciplinary teams and work with these staff to support their understanding of nutrition and hydration issues and work collaboratively to ensure continuity of care. This includes providing specialist dietetic assessment and counselling for adults with clinical eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder

Main duties of the job

As part of the Dietetic Service providing care to a multi-cultural and diverse population, to

deliver a high standard of service to patients with Eating Disorders across Inpatient, Day-patient and Outpatient services.

Key roles are:

  • Patient assessments to assess nutritional needs and devise meal plans
  • Provision of advice to staff regarding Meal plans
  • Provide nutritional education groups
  • Attend multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings to provide feedback nutrition advice/ input to the patient care planning
  • Leading on service development for dietetic provision
  • Providing clinical and management supervision to Band 4 Dietetic Assistant

Clinical:

  • To be a clinical expert within the speciality. Make highly skilled evaluations and decisions about Dietetic intervention options.
  • Provide specialist assessment, diagnosis, advice and intensive intervention for people requiring Dietetic input in specialist clinical area
  • Provide expert advice, joint working and give second opinions concerning highly complex cases within specialist clinical area.
  • Carry own Dietetic caseload within the specialist area Adult ED.
  • To ensure the provision of excellent, evidence-based dietetic care for adults at all times.
  • Ensure that each adult is assessed, that their care is planned, implemented and evaluated, and that this is accurately documented.
  • To use specific diagnostic and assessment methods (e.g. anthropometric measurements, biochemistry data and dietary assessments as appropriate) to inform nutrition-related diagnosis and dietary management goals.
  • Provide an effective and efficient Dietetic service for people with specialist and/or complex needs within the Specialist area.
  • Promote Patient Centred Care and ensure the provision of a welcoming, caring, clean and safe environment for the individuals that access the service.
  • Explore best Dietetic practice, interpreting current evidence to implement and innovate within the Specialist area.
  • To communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers and other staff, overcoming any barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing or emotional events.
  • Act in a consultancy role providing therapeutic advice to people, carers and clinicians through professional expertise.

  • Be a clinical leader within an identified specialist clinical area, leading by example, demonstrating good practice, openness and responsiveness to emerging evidence.
  • Undertake leadership duties related to Dietetics including, the planning and implementation of Dietetic service delivery; working in conjunction with the appropriate operational team leads and professional managers
  • Develop robust professional networks with other Dietetic teams, The Multi-Disciplinary Team, Primary Care, Community Services, Local Authority and Third Sector to enhance service provision
  • Provide evidence-informed interventions and demonstrate high level clinical reasoning skills in implementing best practice; explore innovations in practice and implement them accordingly
  • To assess and review clinical dietetic education materials and produce new evidence based high quality resources to support dietetic practice.

  • To maintain and demonstrate a personal development plan to ensure continued professional development. To meet targets agreed in the personal development plan.
