Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the CNWL Foundation Trust delivering Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) to service users at Vincent Square Eating Disorders Service.

There is a strong CAT service line in the team, and we are looking for someone who can continue to contribute to and develop this within their role. The majority of the work will be with outpatients, although there will be some work with patients in transition across other elements of the service (day-patients and in-patients, early intervention). Our team works flexibly between remote and face to face contact.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will carry out clinical duties, clinically-relevant audit and research (as appropriate), and relevant administrative duties. The successful applicant will have knowledge, training, skill and experience in delivering CAT to patients with eating disorders and will be an accredited CAT practitioner or in the process of securing accreditation with ACAT. He or she will be encouraged to develop his or her academic and clinical knowledge in the context of service-related continuing professional development.

Within the service there is an internal Continued Professional Development training programme and scope to support with relevant research, service development (e.g. teaching and training in and across profession) and supervision opportunities.

CNWL provides the eating disorder service for a local catchment area that includes the boroughs of Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea, Hammersmith & Fulham, Brent, Harrow, Ealing, Hillingdon, and Hounslow. In addition the service accepts national referrals for specialist in-patient and day-patient care. The service has bases at 1 Nightingale Place, Chelsea and Roxborough Road, Harrow-on-the-Hill. Service provision within this scope may at times involve travelling to other sites within the catchment area.

  • Knowledge of the theoretical and evidence base for understanding, formulating and treating the eating disorders.
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management, frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
  • Knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the field of mental health
  • Maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
  • Ability to hold a full caseload, in the context of chronic and enduring severity and challenging presentations.
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health

  • To have completed eight CAT cases, supervised by an ACAT-accredited Supervisor.
  • Experience of specialist CAT assessment and evidence-based treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings.
  • Experience of working within a CAT framework, with patients who present with problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity. This should include specialist training/experience, and a minimum of 50 hours of clinical supervision while working as a CAT practitioner.
  • Experience of teaching, training and clinical/professional supervision.
  • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients' psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care coordinator and also within the context of a multidisciplinary care plan.

  • Supervised experience of delivering other treatments for the eating disorders, including motivational work.
