Job summary

Do you have a special interest in working with children and young people with special needs? We are looking for a highly motivated, experienced and innovative Physiotherapist to join our multidisciplinary Paediatric Therapy Team.

You will be responsible for providing specialist services to the 4-19 year old population with special needs/neurodisability within Harrow. This will include working within Kingsley Special school supporting secondary school aged students with severe learning disabilities, leading the Aquatic therapy service; leading the DCD service and additionally you will carry a designated caseload of mainstream school children and young people with neuro-disability.

Main duties of the job

To provide highly specialist physiotherapy for a complex caseload of:

  • Children and young people with profound and multiple difficulties within secondary special schools
  • Children and young people neurodisability including physical difficulties and SEN with in mainstream schools
  • To provide therapy services to children and young people who do not have an educational placement
  • Children with DCD
  • To children and young people accessing the Aquatic therapy service

To lead the transition process for students transitioning from special schools to FE colleges and adult services

To provide line management to Physiotherapists and Assistants ensuring supervision, appraisal and development

You will be based at Alexandra Avenue Health and Social Care Centre and be part of a dynamic, friendly physiotherapy and multi-disciplinary paediatric team.

There is a strong commitment to continuing professional development and evidence based practice through the provision of regular in-service training, journal club and access to external courses. Support is also provided through regular supervision sessions, peer support meetings and the staff appraisal programme.

Harrow has one of the largest Paediatric Therapy Teams in North West London. You will work alongside colleagues in Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy, providing both acute and community services in the London Borough of Harrow. We are a well-established, dynamic team working collaboratively with colleagues in Health, Education and Social Services.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be an autonomous practitioner, taking a lead in coordinating and providing a highly specialist physiotherapy service to school aged children with profound and multiple difficulties attending Harrow Secondary Special schools for children with severe learning disabilities. Additionally you will be responsible for providing a highly specialist physiotherapy service to children and young people who do not have an educational placement.

The post holder will also have a role in coordinating the DCD service, supporting other staff and working with colleagues in Occupational Therapy to provide assessment and treatment programmes.

The post holder will lead the Aquatic Therapy service offered to Children and young people across Harrow.

He/she will be expected to manage their own caseload, travelling between the schools, the Health Centre and the child/young peoples homes. He/she will work alongside teaching, medical and nursing staff to ensure specialist therapy programmes are in place for children under their care. He/she will be expected to work collaboratively children/young people (CYP), parents/carers and with colleagues in Health, Education and Social Services in planning and delivery of services. He/she will be a key contact for secondary special school services, and will represent the department at relevant meetings both within and outside the Trust. In collaboration with Principal OT & SLT he/she will coordinate the transition process for all students transitioning from special schools on to adult care ensuring clinical standards meet NICE guidance.

  • Recognised Physiotherapy Degree and Registered Member of Chartered Society of Physiotherapists (CSP)
  • Health Care Professions Council - Registration
  • Evidence of CPD in portfolio including attendance of specialist short courses relevant to children to children with disabilities e.g. bobath

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Specialist experience in the management of School aged children and young people with physical difficulties (neurodisability) including established knowledge of assessment tools and appropriate therapeutic interventions including equipment, 24 hour postural management, serial casting and splinting
  • Specialist experience of working in a special needs school
  • Experience of gait analysis/gait assessment and biomechanics including orthotics
  • Specialist experience in the assessment and management of CYP with DCD
  • Significant post graduate experience of working with/teaching parents and carers, other professionals
  • Significant post graduate paediatric experience of managing own caseload of CYP including those within neurodevelopment, physical difficulty, neurology in the community setting; writing clinical notes and reports; clinical audit; working with interpreters and community groups
  • Working knowledge of the roles of other professionals in Health Education and Social Care involved with CYP.
  • Understanding and application of the principles of both record keeping and reporting and of clinical governance and audit
