Job summary

We are seeking an organised and dynamic assistant psychologist who is willing to work in a fast paced clinical environment. We appreciate that potential applicants may not have previous experience in assistant psychologist roles. We would like the post-holder to show an ability to think psychologically about the needs of someone seeking weight loss surgery, to reflect about the clients and a willingness to learn.

The successful applicant may have contact with patients or service users. As an NHS Trust we strongly encourage and support vaccination as this remains the best way to protect yourself, your family, your colleagues and of course patients and service users when working on our healthcare settings.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be part of the psychology team working with individuals referred for bariatric surgery - providing assessment and intervention for those on our pathway, both pre and post operatively.

To provide a qualified specialist clinical psychology service to clients of the service team, across all sectors of care; providing specialist psychological assessment and therapy at the same time as offering advice and consultation on clients' psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues and to other, non professional carers, working autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the team's policies and procedures. To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the area served by the team/service.

About us

Chelsea & Westminster Hospital is a major centre for bariatric (weight loss) surgery for obese patients in London, the South East, South Central and the East of England. It is a requirement of NHS England that bariatric candidates must have received Tier 3 weight management input prior to having bariatric surgery and we currently provide this in-house for patients that do not have access to a local service. Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for the morbidly obese and can lead to significant weight loss and health improvement. However, bariatric surgery is a psychologically demanding process and weight loss is dependent on the individual's ability to implement and maintain radical behaviour change. All patients are assessed by the multi-disciplinary team who follow the NICE guidelines for obesity in determining suitability for surgery.
