Job summary
The post-holder will be a clinical expert in all areas of Midwifery. As an expert Midwife the post holder will be responsible for the development of skills and knowledge of midwives, medical staff and maternity support staff within the Women's Health Speciality. The post holder will take a lead role in the planning, provision, monitoring, audit and reporting of statutory and mandatory training and other development activities within maternity. In conjunction with the Risk Management team, the post holder will identify skills/ knowledge gaps in staff members and develop and implement strategies support staff and improve performance. The post holder will be expected to make themselves available to work in the clinical areas to maintain their own expertise and competence and meet the needs of the service during peaks in acuity.
Main duties of the job
- Work in accordance with the NMC's rules and code of conduct for midwives.
- Maintain and develop professional knowledge and competence in accordance within the NMC recommendations.
- Act as a role model for Midwifery practice to all staff within the Care Group. Support and develop new staff and those who have identified issues in practice.
- Ensure high quality professional education is delivered to maternity staff of all disciplines.
Act as a "Specialist advisor" on issues relating to Midwifery care.

We operatefrom three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, andUlverstonCommunity Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies,daycase and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
