Job summary

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Specialist Pharmacist to join our Pharmacy team at Westmorland General Hospital (WGH). This Band 8a role focuses on Surgery and Family Services, including specialist surgical, gynaecology, and ophthalmology care. You will play a key role in optimising medicines use, supporting clinical teams, and ensuring safe, effective, and cost-efficient pharmaceutical care across the WGH site.

You must be highly motivated and able to demonstrate leadership skills and manage conflicting demands on your time. You will demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills. You will contribute to patient safety improvement and medicines optimisation initiatives including ensuring the implementation of best value medicines in your area.

Main duties of the job

  • Act as the specialist pharmacist for Surgery and Family Services, providing expert clinical input for surgical, gynaecology, and ophthalmology patients.
  • Deliver Responsible Pharmacist duties within the WGH dispensary.
  • Provide clinical pharmacy services across wards, theatres, and outpatient areas, including medicines reconciliation and prescription review.
  • Support ophthalmology services, including biosimilar management for Wet AMD pathways.
  • Contribute to medicines governance, antimicrobial stewardship, and policy development.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external partners to ensure best practice and continuity of care.
  • Oversee stock management and medicines procurement to minimise waste and support cost-effective prescribing.

Core hours of work will be Monday to Friday 8:30 to 17:00 with rotational Sunday working.

On-call weekday nights are currently approximately once per month.

This post will be based at the Westmorland General Hospital site.

About us

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life-threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
