Job summary

Wanting to gain more experience in emergency medicine? Gain higher specialist skills and training on your career path? Get a buzz from working under pressure and at pace? Want to live next to the beautiful Lake District national park?

We have an exciting opportunity for a resident doctor to apply for a position as a senior clinical fellow at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. We recognise that there is a lot of uncertainty in developing your career and hope that we can help. We are particularly keen to develop doctors who are interested in Emergency Medicine as a career who may be taking EM exams and/or trying to get into formal EM training or following the CESR pathway. However, lots of future careers can be viewed through Emergency Medicine and we are happy to help you develop skills and connections in all areas.

We strive to deliver great patient care by working together as a team and we are looking for equally passionate and enthusiastic doctors who are highly motivated, organised and keen to broaden their experience and exposure to emergency medicine. As a Senior Clinical Fellow, you will be working independently, after a short induction, and alongside other senior Emergency Medicine speciality doctors in direct patient management and in supervising the work of the junior medical staff. You will be able to contribute ideas about improving the patient journey within the Emergency Department.

Main duties of the job

The RLI Emergency Department is led by 12 active, approachable and supportive Emergency Medicine Consultants who have a range of skills and interests. The Department sees around 64,000 new patients per annum, is a trauma unit, has an onsite Minor Treatment unit and paediatric department where you will have a significant opportunity to develop your paediatric skills.

You will independently deliver emergency medical care from first assessment, selecting appropriate diagnostics based on your primary assessment and following through to treatment or referral to specialties, General Practice and other community-based services, in line with recognised RCEM and Trust guidance and policy. This is not a supernumerary post.

The appointment will be at the RLI, for 40-hours (full time) - 80:20 split direct clinical care: EDT. The ED provides an effective service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year . This means working to an agreed rota which covers nights, weekends and within national and local standards bank/ public holidays is required.

Holidays and other leave are agreed within the team as per the departmental holiday rules and must be applied for at least 6-weeks.

Equality of opportunity is our Policy. The Trust provides health services to a diverse community.

Applicants must hold full registration with the GMC and have a proven record of experience in Emergency Medicine. Applicants should have at least 1 year experience post registration.
