This post is full time and fixed term for 12 months extendable depending on performance.
The post involves working at Foundation Year 2 and above level and will optimise your clinical experience and enable you to gain relevant clinical competencies. When on night duty Rota, the post requires you to look after all surgical patients i.e. Surgery/Orthopaedics/Urology/ Day Surgery/ENT and ED referrals.
The post holders will participate on a 1 in 12 night time cover and will include weekend cover in the nights. During the day time duties there will be an appropriate allocation to surgery and orthopaedics elective activity. Daytime/late on call is 1:12.
Main duties of the job
Duties of the post, as appropriate, within each specialty are as follows:
Responsibility for admitting and clerking patients, initiating an investigative and management plan which should be discussed with a senior member of the team.
Taking prompt action when patient condition deteriorates and escalating when appropriate to senior colleagues
Completing all appropriate documentation and TTO's
Taking responsibility for the continuity of care of in-patients
Supervision of in-patients and organising appropriate investigations in accordance with consultant's instructions
Attending ward rounds
Agreeing diagnosis and completing discharge summaries
To write clear, accurate and approved drug and fluid prescriptions.
To accept and assess GP referrals.
Appropriate comprehensive handover of patients at change of duties especially before and after night duties.
To undertake all common ward-work and medical procedures as required including:
Venepuncture, setting up an intravenous infusion, Inserting a urinary catheter, arterial blood sampling, ECG's.
To comply with all hospital policies and procedures in particular those relating to Health and
Safety at Work
To maintain confidentiality relating to the affairs of the hospital, its patients or Consultant users in accordance with the Trust's confidentiality policy
To comply with the Hospital's Clinical Governance framework and complaints policy and procedure.
About us
We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
