Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Matron to join the Surgery & Critical Care team. You will work with our existing Matrons for Theatres & Surgery on specific quality initiatives, assist in setting up new services and maintaining high standards.

Surgical Hubs, which are separate from Emergency Services, are part of plans nationally to increase capacity for elective care with more dedicated operating theatres and beds. Hubs exclusively perform planned surgery and mainly focus on high volume, low complexity (HVLC) surgery across various specialities, including ophthalmology, general surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology, ear, nose and throat and urology. Westmorland General Hospital has an ambition to meet top clinical and operational standards and is working towards Surgical Hub accreditation and the successful candidate will take an lead role within this process.

We are looking for a highly motivated nurse or OPD, with the possession of both a strong clinical knowledge base & relevant skill set. You will have previous experience at band 7 level & demonstrable experience in leadership and change management within a surgical setting. You will understand our strategic & Care Group objectives & be able to translate these to our staff.

Excellent negotiation, influencing & communication skills are essential & you must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate & sustain new innovative ways of working which facilitate developments in nursing practice.

Main duties of the job

To work closely with the Clinical Theatre Managers in the development of theatre services within UHMBT with a very specific focus as outlined above.

To act as a clinical expert to the Theatre services providing expert, professional, strategic and clinical operational support and advice on very complex issues

To work with the Senior Management Team in the development of the Theatre business strategy and its links to the Care Group business plan.

To provide professional and comprehensive advice to Clinical managers and staff across the Theatre services which supports performance improvement and development.

To be called upon to project manage and monitor specific projects to support service development within the Theatres.

In the absence of the Theatre Manager the Matron will be responsible for identifying staffing needs and managing recruitment, training, deployment, leave and development of staff in order to provide the appropriate skill mix.

About us

We operatefrom three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, andUlverstonCommunity Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies,daycase and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education & Qualifications

Essential

  • The post holder will be required to be registered with a relevant professional body, e.g. Qualified ODP or 1st level Nurse.
  • Post-graduate qualification to Masters Level, or equivalent and/or willingness to undertake

Experience

  • Considerable relevant clinical experience in a senior clinical or managerial role in a complex organisation equivalent to the NHS
