Job summary
The Pathology Departments of both North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust and South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust are working collaboratively to develop a joint service from all hospital sites. Though the department is based at The James Cook University Hospital, this position may require cross site working as appropriate.
An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Apprentice Healthcare Science Support Worker to join the Microbiology department. The department is UKAS accredited and has IBMS training approval, CPD is actively encouraged.
The vacancy is 37.5 hours per week per person, this is a permanent position working as support scientist within the Microbiology department.
The department operates a 24/7 shift system at A4C rates. It is expected that the post holder will participate in shift working after a suitable period of training. The post holder will undertake the Healthcare Science Assistant Level 2 apprenticeship standard. You will be released for study to achieve this qualification (location to be confirmed)
A high standard of patient confidentiality is required.
Main duties of the job
To work under the supervision of the practitioner and staff members in the delivery of high-quality care.
To help and support to a broad spectrum of service users, and the multi-disciplinary team.
Become prepared and knowledgeable within the working environment and work towards gaining a Level 2 Healthcare Science Assistant apprenticeship.
Assist in the implementation of high-quality care guided by a team leader/manager or supervisor.
To attend and participate in structured teaching/ theory sessions to gain the identified educational framework to a Level 2 Apprenticeship.
Perform a range of routine healthcare science activities under supervision e.g. sample preparation
Perform basic sample reception and process duties including the receipt, barcode labelling and preparation of samples for analysis, loading of samples onto analysers or other laboratory equipment and sample archiving.
Most apprenticeship programmes in the UK are government-funded. To qualify for this funding, you must have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years before starting the apprenticeship. This means living in the UK for most of the past three years without significant absences.
